The value of the Venus of Willendorf is its aesthetic component. The creation of this work of art demonstrates to modern people that their ancestors were concerned about beauty issues (Zygmont, n.d.). It has no practical application, and the theory that it could be used for religious purposes can be refuted easily. The Venus figurine makes it possible to suggest that the Palaeolithic people were aware of the importance of women since it depicts not a male body (Zygmont, n.d.). There are several versions of what it symbolizes, but none of them are scientifically based. According to one of the most common perceptions, the figurine of Venus depicts a woman playing the roles of wife and mother. However, in reality, the explanation may turn out to be completely different. For example, a figurine could symbolize a connection with the animal or the world of ancestors.
A possible reason why the ancients created the Hall of Bulls and Lascaux was their belief in the existence of so-called “hunting magic” (Looney, n.d.). They did not know the fundamental laws of nature; they were also unaware of how to confront harsh environmental conditions. Therefore, people tried to find ways to alleviate the hardships of their wretched existence. According to another theory, images tell about past events (Looney, n.d.). There are pretty detailed and elaborate images, looking at which one can imagine what was happening a long time ago.
Four teenagers accidentally discovered Lascaux’s cave in 1940. Cultural sites such as this one prove that people have long needed to communicate using images (Looney, n.d.). Experts believe that the pictures that people see on the walls of Lascaux have ritual significance. Moreover, their role is that they capture ancient mythological plots and heroes in their original form. At Lascaux, scientists have found one of the earliest examples of depicting people, and in a very realistic manner.
