Theme in Literature
The literary term “theme” refers to the central idea, insight, or message that a writer wishes to convey through a story. It is the underlying meaning that the author explores through the narrative, characters, and their actions. Themes are often universal concepts that resonate with readers, such as love, freedom, identity, or redemption (D4Darious, 2015).
Sonny’s Blues
In James Baldwin’s “Sonny’s Blues,” one prominent theme is the power of music as a means of expression and liberation. The story revolves around two brothers in Harlem, one a schoolteacher and the other, Sonny, a jazz musician struggling with heroin addiction. Music serves as a crucial element in the narrative, symbolizing the complexity of human emotions and experiences.
For Sonny, music is not just a passion but a vital means of coping with his inner turmoil and the harsh realities of life in Harlem. Through his music, Sonny communicates his pain, hopes, and fears more eloquently than words could ever express. This theme is beautifully illustrated in the scene where the narrator watches Sonny play in a jazz club, finally understanding the depth of his brother’s struggles and the redemptive power of music to heal and connect people.
Cathedral
The short story that resonated most personally with me was “Cathedral” by Raymond Carver. This narrative explores themes of prejudice, communication, and the capacity for personal change and connection. The story is told from the perspective of an unnamed narrator who is initially uncomfortable and prejudiced against his wife’s blind friend, Robert. However, as the story progresses, the narrator’s experience of drawing a cathedral with Robert, guided only by verbal instructions and touch, becomes a powerful metaphor for seeing beyond the superficial and appreciating the depth of human connection. This moment of shared vulnerability and creativity leads to a profound shift in the narrator’s perception.
What profoundly impacted me was the narrative’s scrutiny into the facile nature of constructing assessments predicated on cursory observations and how authentic dialogue and mutual experiences can dismantle obstacles, paving the way for unforeseen comprehension and empathy. Carver masterfully uses the simple act of drawing together to symbolize the potential for transformation within each of us, reminding readers of the importance of looking beyond the surface to connect with others truly.
