The Rebellion and Reaction in the 1960s and 1970s 

Introduction

Historians have often mentioned the fact that twentieth-century science and technology was influenced every aspect of the lives of the American people. To secure radical interests, the twentieth-century young generation makes different movements in America. Different problems were expressed through their youth rebellions which made a variety of social crises that affected the normal living environment of America.

Often American youth misused these facilities, but they led very decisive life and made disturbances to the elder generation. Sometimes, youth deviated through new ways of modern life of the twentieth century causing their alienation from other sections. Alienation is one of the important causes of their violence. Some youth were very aggressive and made problems. Youth revolutions in the 1920s initiated in the college campuses and gradually increased youth movements. Youth movement allowed the youth to express their ideas and feelings into action. The young generation tried to change their malicious ideas and feelings into actions.

Main body

In the modern period, youth culture is gradually developed and redolent at best. It is found in the public records describing young men’s misbehaviors. During 1920 some young American people started following the bad behaviors and very tricky attitudes. The civil rights and antiwar movement points out that the energies of youth rebellions in that period. By late 1960, American youth rebellions utterly change their living environment.

They dropped their life and they utterly changed their lifestyle. They grew long hair and wore dark and long clothes. They also met in urban and rural group homes and took new decisions. Their lives were more complicated and very dangerous. These rebellions were making different problems in those periods. They used drugs and alcohol in their everyday life. They liked to hear hard, rock, and complicated music. All the rebellions engaged in hasty and illegal sexual activities. So, the youth suffered different problems in those periods. During the middle of 1960, the youth rebellions spread their cruelty all over the world.

The youth revolts spread from the rural to urban areas and extended to the southern college campuses across the nation. Historians have documented that in the 1920s and 1960s; the youth suffered the problems of alienation that, alienation is a powerful feeling of isolation and loneliness. The online article Alienation explained that “They attribute this alienation to a variety of societal conditions: the rapid changes in society during this period, the increase in alcohol and drug abuse, violence in the media, or the lack of communal values in the culture at large.” (Alienation. (2001, para.2).

In the 20th century, people changed their traditional model of life. So, they have developed their lifestyle in different ways. They try to develop new attractive and well-developed facilities through science and technologies. These facilities produced a tremendous change in American society, especially in the life of young people. Thus, modern science and technologies became an essential part of their lifestyle. In another way, these technologies are one of the ten main causes of youth alienation. In the 1960s, the youth increased their feeling of alienation. These alienations utterly change their lifestyle.

At that time, young people developed an addiction to alcohol and drugs. And they misused modern technologies like different media, telephones, etc. These technologies help to spread their brutal ideas all over the world. The article permitted to make the readers think that;” The major topics will include the American “Red Scare” reaction to the Leninist Revolution in Russia in 1917, the continuing emancipation of the American woman; the revolt of youth against the Victorian mentality and culture of their parents; the cigarette smoking and excessive drinking of the young rebels.” (Frank, n.d., p.1).

Analyzing the history, one can see that some student protesters go back from working as volunteers in the civil rights movement and they bring with them a revolutionary idealism, to begin with, manifested protests against university regulations. The Twentieth century had influenced every aspect of the people in their lifestyles, concepts, and thought. Science and technology played a significant role in the alienation of the youth.

The article entitled Alienation comments that; “Alienation is expressed differently by different people. Some become withdrawn and lethargic; others may react with hostility and violence; still, others may become disoriented, rejecting traditional values and behavior by adopting an outlandish appearance and erratic behavior patterns.” (Williams, 2009, para.50).

The new generations had different facilities produced as the result of technological development. Cinema, telegraph, telephone, and electricity gave them new inspirations about a new different future. Conservative ideas were questioned with the new spirit given by technological progress. Especially, the young generations changed their attitude because of the influence of the technology and its development.

Educational institutions originally introduced radical activities in the United States of America. During this period, communication facilities tremendously developed and helped the growth of youth and student movements and their rebellions. In the 1920s, a student movement on public issues started in the USA. The National Student Forum (1921–1929), was an association with the liberal character. It became an important organization because of its publication in the weeklies. The modern printing press helped them to publish their radical ideals. The leftist rebellions also started in the the1920s which aimed at an egalitarian society by the distribution of technological and natural resources.

Asian countries witnessed many revolts that influenced science and technology. “The young Turks” was an example of the influence of technological development among the westerns. At the same time, Europe witnessed fascist rebellions. There was a technological background behind this movement. The second Industrial revolution strengthened the forces of Germany, leading to the First World War in 1914. After the Great War, rightist ideology came into the forefront of the Germans with the support of the youths. Italian youths also were influenced by the fascist concepts and became members of the Black Shirts.

Conclusion

Youth rebellions paid their attention to the growing characters of modern society, especially in the decades of 1920s and 1960s. Many rules and regulations were introduced by the governments as the result of the young generation’s revolutions. Youth rebellions express the real nature of the modern world. These youth rebellions and revolutions gave real information about this modern world. Revolutions of the youth made the significance to changing world, suitable to a modern scientific period. Moreover, alienation of the youths made problems which were helpful for the future society.
