W.E.B. DuBois and the First Scientific Study of Afro-America by Lange

The author of the chapter “W.E.B. DuBois and the First Scientific Study of Afro-America” underlines the significant contribution to ethnographic research of this outstanding scientist. DuBois presents a scientific analysis of black history and culture that damages the white-centric approach of the time. Although DuBois is subjective, “since racism made neutrality impossible”, his ability to be a careful observer makes a huge contribution to American anthropology (Lange, 1983, 138). DuBois is a pioneer in the study of African-American life realities, contributing to the fight against racial prejudices.

The Philadelphia Negro is a study of African American life. The purpose of this essay is to study the social problems that exist in the Philadelphian community. The content of the work includes the area’s professional structure and African American family life. The research methodology is based on qualitative interviews with residents of poor neighborhoods about their daily problems. The Philadelphia Negro is a significant case study that includes questionnaires, “ethnographic analysis”, and descriptive elements (Young, 2019, 43). This work is significant because it concludes that racial prejudices are unfounded and represent one of the first qualitative sociological studies.

DuBois was both an incredible scholar and an active participant in social activities. “He had assumed the Presidency of the American Negro Academy, founded in 1897” (Lange, 1983, 138). DuBois’ participation in public organizations is dictated by his intentions of social activism aimed at combating racial discrimination. A scientist who wanted to study the life of his community faced a society full of prejudices, and only comprehensive activities allowed him to make such a significant contribution to sociological science.

African Americans in the studies carried out by DuBois are associated with Africa as a mysterious land, which they consider their homeland. “Africa is distinctly the land of the Mother,” he writes, emphasizing this inseparable connection (Lange, 1983, 145). Despite all the tragic historical events, African Americans inherit African culture and bring it into the life of American society. These age-old ties, traditions, and lifestyle features should become the subject of cultural integration, not discrimination.
