Violating speed limits is a common practice for drivers in most countries. With the increased quality and safety of modern vehicles, there is a high demand for raising speed limits. While many people argue against a speed limit, some believe it is better to follow general roadway guidelines to reduce inherent risks. This essay agrees with the opinion that it is of utmost importance to adhere to speed limits. Most of the reasons are related to safety, traffic level, and additional expenses on accidents.
Ignoring the speed limit results in severe problems for both drivers and people in a cab. Speed limits, along with other guidelines, are set to guarantee everyone’s safety. When people drive slowly, they have more time to react and prevent a possible car crash. According to Zhao et al., in 2017, accidents caused by speeding in China accounted for about 2.88% of the total number of accidents. Furthermore, accidents cause traffic problems that initiate other issues, such as increased noise levels, pollution, and dissatisfaction among commuters. Thus, it is safer and cheaper to follow the rules and pay fines for driving above the limit instead of paying compensation after an accident or injury.
Even though there has been improvement in the design and construction of motor vehicles and new roads, speed limits have remained relatively the same. Thus, people driving cars with a high-quality engine, excellent driving skills, ethical practice, and physical conditions are likely to go over the speed limit. However, it does not apply to everyone on the road. Not every person can afford a new car, has a good vision and attention.
Many individuals want speed limits to be raised. However, there are many cases of death and injuries linked to this factor. Since traffic problems tend to emerge from one another, it is important to adhere to the speed limit and stop the occurrence of other issues. Moreover, people with excellent health and stable finance are less vulnerable than the elderly and those who are just learning to drive. General roadway guidelines, however, must administer all citizens, not only a specific part of the population.
