Introduction
Many ethnic and racial minorities have been experiencing different forms of discrimination in the United States. The major groups that have been facing discrimination include Asians, Native Americans, and Latinos. Some groups such as “the disabled, women, and homosexuals have been facing a wide range of challenges” (Jacobs & Tope, 2007, p. 1483). It is also agreeable that more minority groups are facing different challenges in the country. However, the government has been using a number of policies in order to support the needs of these minority groups (Civil Rights for Women and Minorities, 2014).
Asians and African Americans
A large number of Asians and African Americans have also achieved their goals. The targeted interviewees indicated that they were currently getting quality education (Feder, 2012). A number of modern schools were identified during the exercise. This progress explains how the government has been supporting the rights of different minority groups. The interviewees also indicated that the rate of racial stereotyping had decreased significantly in the country. The targeted interviewees also believed that the infamous Internment Camps (ICs) created a dark history for many Asian Americans (Jacobs & Tope, 2007). According to interviewees, Obama’s victory marked a brighter future for many minority groups in the United States.
The Latinos and Women
The Latinos have been facing different challenges in the United States. Many Civil Rights Groups (CRGs) have been boycotting in different parts of the country (Feder, 2012). My Latino interviewees indicated that they were having more liberties. Many Hispanics are working hard in order to achieve their goals. According to the interviewees, more Latinos have “achieved new goals especially after the 2012 presidential election” (Feder, 2012, p. 8).
The issue of inequality has also been affecting many women in the United States. However, this minority group has achieved more liberties especially after the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. More women “have gained professional, educational, and political mileages in the country” (Jacobs & Tope, 2007, p. 1463). The Women’s Rights Movement (WRM) has also led to the establishment of new laws. Such laws have safeguarded the rights of more women in the country (Feder, 2012). Some of these laws include “Pay Discrimination, Reproductive Rights, and Sexual Harassment Law” (Feder, 2012, p. 8). More women are engaging in different sporting activities. They also have decent homes. New public facilities such as schools, hospitals, and nursing homes are supporting these groups.
Buildings for the Disabled
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has empowered more disabled citizens. The targeted individuals believed strongly that “the ADA has removed several barriers to equal housing, employment, transportation, and education” (Feder, 2012, p. 11). However, some disabled individuals are unable to achieve their potentials. The government should be ready to support the rights of these individuals (Civil Rights for Women and Minorities, 2014).
Aspects of the Built Environment
Many Native Americans (NAs) have faced numerous struggles and challenges in the United States. This minority group “became naturalized in the 1820s” (Feder, 2012, p. 11). The Native Americans have been facing different forms of discrimination. Such Native Americans have also achieved more rights within the past few decades. A large number of “Native Americans are still facing high rates of unemployment, poverty, and discrimination in the United States” (Jacobs & Tope, 2007, p. 1481). According to the study, more Native Americans are currently working hard in order to deal with the problem of racial discrimination. The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community has encountered several challenges (Civil Rights for Women and Minorities, 2014). The government has created more monuments and public facilities to support the rights of different minority groups.
Such facilities include nursing homes, hospitals, parks, and recreational centers. These minority groups are also living in decent neighborhoods.
Some “streets and parks are also named after women” (Feder, 2012, p. 7). These aspects of the built environment show how different minority groups have progressed within the past five decades.
Conclusion
This study shows clearly that more minority groups are getting new opportunities in the country. The American government has been using a number of policies in order to support the needs of these minority groups. This approach will support the expectations of the above minority groups. The agreeable fact is that every minority group has achieved new civil rights (Jacobs & Tope, 2007). These minority groups are also facing a wide range of challenges such as discrimination. This fact explains why “such groups are working hard in order to be recognized by the government” (Feder, 2012, p. 6). It is also agreeable that “most of these battles are also being fought today” (Jacobs & Tope, 2007, p. 1479). In conclusion, the government should work hard in order to support these minority groups.
