Evaluating the Author’s Purpose and Argument Validity
Roose’s article “We need to talk about how good A.I. is getting” describes advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and the potential implications of these advances for society. One of the key points highlighted in the article is that AI has advanced to the point where it can now outperform humans in certain areas of expertise, such as playing games, recognizing objects in images, and writing news articles.
The author was invited to test DALL-E 2 during its beta period to see how fast artificial intelligence technologies are developing and improving (Roose para. 2). The author also gives examples of research and development in this area. For example, he talks about DeepMind’s AlphaFold, which helped progress in molecular biology, and OpenAI’s GPT-3 (Roose) language model.
In addition, the author demonstrates several points of view regarding the development and use of AI, which helps maintain the article’s objectivity. Therefore, the article has sufficient evidence to support its validity.
Personal Agreement or Disagreement with the Author’s Ideas
However, I do not fully agree with some statements. The author claims that “in a few years, the vast majority of the photos, videos, and text we encounter on the internet could be A.I.-generated” (Roose, para. 33). Nevertheless, even under optimal conditions for maintaining the current pace of AI development, these technologies will require control by people for a long time to come. Since it is a new technology, many aspects of its activities have yet to be explored. When preparing a presentation on this topic, it is essential to discuss the potential risks associated with AI, such as the possibility of using it to create highly realistic deep fakes or to automate cyberattacks.
In addition, there are concerns that AI can reinforce existing prejudices and inequalities in society since its algorithms are derived based on the information received. (Roose para. 33). Thus, artificial intelligence has great potential and prospects for various fields. However, more research is needed on technology safety issues and public awareness of the benefits of using AI.
