The presentation is devoted to analyzing the psychological peculiarities of the data visualization design. The video provides many valuable insights about the color and essential visual functioning of the human brain, which I did not learn from the previous assignments. For example, Kristan Hodge discusses vision deviation and people’s inability to identify particular colors (Data visualization design essentials, 2020). The designer describes how pre-attentive processing could avoid color and shape perception difficulties. She even provides viewers with a color palette that can be used for color-blind people. The role of contrast in features recognition was also an essential topic discussed by Kristian. Many ideas mentioned in the presentation about this topic were elaborated on in the previous assignments.
Another new piece of information in the presentation is discussing of the role of the working memory and the highlighting the necessary objects of the visualization to make the viewer remember it. Even though this topic has already been discussed, Kristan provides valuable theoretical knowledge and examples about human working memory functioning (Data visualization design essentials, 2020). The essential aspect of the presentation is the storytelling topic. The previous assignments also explored the importance of understanding the fundamental concepts the designer wants to represent. However, Kristan expands this topic and highlights the precise audience survey’s necessity to eliminate potentially misleading elements (Data visualization design essentials, 2020). Moreover, the author of the presentation shows practical examples of visualization cleanup to explain the correlation between information perception efficiency and design. Compared to the previous information, the video contributes to a better realization of how visual perception works. The valuable theoretical insights and practical examples which are shown in the video facilitate a better understanding of the visualization perception aspects.
