Behaviors and skills that managers need to exhibit for an organization to be successful
A leader is very important in any organization and must be careful on how he/she acts as many people look at their actions and tend to follow them. Some of the behaviors and skills that managers need to exhibit to make the organization successful involves being concerned about the welfare of others and supporting their employees. Moreover, leaders ought to give directions to their employees on how a certain task should be done as well as tell them the goals of the organization and when they are expected to meet the deadline. Additionally, leaders need to have some skills on team building as well as influencing their followers (Hughes et al, 2007, p.199).
Competencies found in the Profiler Wheel (Figure 8.3) and the way they apply to Andra Rush
As a leader, Andra Rush is highly committed. This is because after listening to the complaints of the nurses, she went back to school to learn and experience the mistreatment other nurses were going through and upon encountering patients in the hospital, she would listen to their complaints. Leaders should also be courageous and self-confident. Andra demonstrated this as she accomplished many tasks without being bothered by what others could say about her approach to the job at hand. In addition, she also started her own trucking business (Hughes et.al, 2007, p.237). This also demonstrates her innovative skills and ability to execute plans. These are important traits that every leader needs to cultivate. In addition, leaders should build relationships between the different groups of individuals in the business. For instance, Andra was able to establish some relations between her and patients and that is why she was able to learn some of the problems that the patients go through as they are reporting to the hospital. Lastly, leaders should demonstrate a high level of integrity. This was true with Andra as before doing anything, she could first listen to the concept and could only act on it after fully understanding it.
Mentor for Andra Rush
Mohawk’s grandmother has been identified as Andra Rush’s mentor. Andra explicitly states that her grandmother made her have a spirit that made helped her to overcome all the isolations from her fellow business women. As a result, she was able to continue well with the business that she had started and she built her confidence to a point where she could influence others.
Self-defeating behaviors that contribute to management derailment
Many factors lead to the derailment of organizations and by extension, that of their leaders. Some of these include being so conservative in the way of doing things as well as using similar solutions in solving problems even though the methods are irrelevant. Additionally, some of the leaders are not committed to their work and they are hostile, cannot trust others, keep on postponing things, blame others even for their own mistakes, and are overcommitted. Moreover, these leaders do not honor their promises and are arrogant and inflexible. Lastly, these leaders worry so much even over things they cannot change and think they are so perfect and therefore all people ought to act like them. All these self-defeating traits lead to derailment (Hughes et.al, 2007, p.220-221).
Lessons that Andra Rush learned from the failure of others
As a result of the failures of others, Andra Rush has learnt that for one to be successful, they must be willing to listen to others and where it calls for change, to embrace it. This is in addition to trying to understand why people are doing the things they do. Moreover, she has learnt that before doing anything, one has to understand the concept and look for a solution, instead of always complaining when confronted with a problem.
