Assessment and Management of Nutrition in Older People: Analysis of Article

The article provides an in-depth discussion of nutrition and its significance in older adults. According to the article authors, nutrition is a crucial health module in older people and tends to distress the aging process (Ahmed & Haboubi, 2010). In this population, the malnutrition prevalence gradually increases and is mainly linked with the decline in immune dysfunction, functional status, and increased readmission rates in hospitals, anemia, and poor healing process, among many more.

Moreover, numerous diseases are linked to malnutrition in the elderly population. Some of the common illnesses include cardiac arrest, respiratory diseases, and endocrine disorders. As revealed by the study, depression represents 2 percent and 10 percent of the elderly community in the US, leading to weight and appetite loss (Ahmed & Haboubi, 2010). Also, older individuals who are socially isolated and live on their own rarely observe their diet and hence end up suffering from malnutrition.

The article follows most of the rules of peer-reviewed publications and hence qualifies as one of the excellent journals in public health. Also, both the article authors are well qualified as we have Ahmed specializing in Elderly and Adult Medicine in “Nevil Hall Hospital” and Nadim being a consultant physician for “Adult and Elderly Medicine in Nevill Hall Hospital” (VidGrid, 2019). The research findings tend to support the various nutrition recommendations in older adults discussed in the chapters covered in classwork.

The chapter’s contents emphasize that the elderly should always eat a balanced and healthy diet to avoid diseases arising from malnutrition. The article’s strength includes having several subheadings that help the readers better understand nutrition in the elderly (VidGrid, 2019). Additionally, the article’s supporting references are well-researched and play a fundamental role in supporting the main topic. The major weakness of this article is its incapability to analyze its data with other broad studies depicting individual groups all over the world.
