Introduction
Credibility is an essential writing quality that captures and maintains the reader’s attention and engagement. Presenting and developing effective argumentation through an appropriate tone and proper references is vital for good writing. However, some credibility qualities might be more difficult for a writer to achieve than others. Applying the Rogerian argument has been an ongoing difficulty, though I find it relatively easy to maintain a reasonable tone.
The Hardest Qualities of Credibility
Applying Rogerian Argument
Writing often requires objectivity and neutrality from a writer, and the Rogerian argument is partially aimed at achieving that. Applying this argument means focusing on the “similarities rather than differences” between the opposing views in search of a common ground for discussion and mutual benefits (Mauk & Metz, 2018, p. 545). Though this principle helps mitigate the risk of conflict and writer’s bias, overusing can also harm the discussion. There are topics, such as, gender rights, that I find difficult to compromise on and, therefore, cannot force myself to explore and defend ideas that I find inappropriate.
Creating Reasonable Tone
Failure to sympathize with all parties involved in the discussion can lead to a writer struggling with maintaining an appropriate tone in a paper. However, I tend to overcome my dissatisfaction with opinions that conflict with my views for quality writing and find ways to maintain a proper tone. Building credibility is vital to keep the reader’s engagement and interest by avoiding overwhelming and alienating them (Mauk & Metz, 2018). Following this principle, I usually maintain a neutral yet engaging tone, presenting arguments and conclusions rather than forcing them on readers.
Conclusion
In conclusion, building credibility is associated with specific difficulties and possibilities. Different writers may face various challenges in the process, though some qualities of credibility may be easier to achieve than others. In my writing, I often find it difficult to pay equal credit to views that conflict with my beliefs, though it does not interfere with my ability to maintain a reasonable tone.
