Business Ethics in Globalized Environments: Importance, Challenges, and Benefits

Introduction

The business is an excellent example of collaboration among many people working towards specific, complex, and achievable goals. This form of human action has brought various innovations and developments to society, enabling people to live in prosperity. Nevertheless, the numerous issues that can affect this type of collaboration can negatively impact, or even destroy, the business entirely.

Global crises, wars, problems related to globalization, pandemics, and more are among them. However, some essential tools will help business leaders combat these problems effectively and save their companies. This essay examines the peculiarities of ethics application in business environments, its advantages, and key issues. By applying business ethics, the company can adopt healthy, rational actions that will enable it to thrive and become a market leader.

The Essential Purpose of Ethics in Business

When considering the purpose of ethics in business, it is essential to acknowledge that the business environment is a complex structure comprising various fields, departments, and processes. Their primary purpose is to collaboratively and effectively complete the main tasks to achieve the company’s goals in accordance with its strategic plan (Scharding, 2018). This fact highlights that the problems the organization tends to solve might be controversial, challenging, and multifaceted. It is considered vital when discussions begin, and dozens of coworkers start expressing their opinions.

However, one should understand that the complexity of issues does not imply that there is only one possible or right solution or approach to solving them. According to Scharding (2018), “it just means that the issue has not been settled yet. Many issues are complicated to resolve” (p. 52). As a result, ethics in the business environment play a crucial role.

Having business ethics in the organization means that directors and managers create a healthy and efficient environment where everyone can be heard and contribute. It is essential when solving complex issues with various controversies, as it helps establish mutual understanding and respect among employers. It will allow the company to answer the questions about what is good and bad for it and act rationally and nobly.

Important Issues Regarding Business Ethics

There are many situations in which business ethics is crucial. For example, Weiss (2021) considers numerous external factors that directly affect how the company operates ethically in his book Business Ethics. As Weiss (2021) states, “global crises, natural disasters, corporate scandals, globalization, deregulation, mergers, technology, and global cyberterrorism” (p. 4). It means that all these factors require specific ethical approaches within the business to avoid losing its reputation and to comply with laws and policies. For example, while stressing respect among coworkers, it is crucial to mention such points as racism, national differences, sexual issues, and others.

Another severe external challenge that requires businesses to act ethically is the COVID-19 pandemic. Remarkably, Weiss notes that many companies that have survived the pandemic have established effective and meaningful business ethics instruments for their employees (Weiss, 2021). For example, one of the essential issues was the development of remote work and health policies to save employees’ lives (Weiss, 2021). It also assumes three main types of ethics described by Weiss in his books: normative, metaethics, and descriptive ethics (Weiss, 2021). They all stress the importance of acting rationally under pressure from external factors, with profound consideration of what is right and wrong.

Business Ethics for Globalization

The modern world assumes the processes that unite people worldwide, such as globalization. This factor requires businesses to change their structure and functioning. In particular, if the company wants to grow and succeed, collaboration with other market players is essential. Remarkably, the company may aim to open its infrastructure, manufacturing complexes, or representative offices in other countries.

Considering these opportunities, the organization’s leaders and board of directors must be aware of the ethical standards applicable to this country (Scharding, 2018). It encompasses cultural and historical aspects, as well as jurisdictional and political issues that must be thoroughly studied. As a result, the company’s growth and global expansion will align with the country’s regulations, benefiting the business. It will be crucial, for example, to collaborate with local companies and, for managers, to seek local talents and professionals to employ.

Conclusion

In conclusion, it is essential to emphasize that a multitude of factors necessitate the importance of ethics in business. In particular, various external issues need to be considered by the company’s leaders to face global challenges and changes. Moreover, ethical principles within the organization would be vital to the organization’s benefits and profits. For example, operations in other countries’ markets and intensive collaboration with stakeholders are crucial for increasing the company’s competitiveness and reputation. In addition, one of the most crucial issues that ethics enables the leader to address is controversy and misunderstanding within the organization. This approach will help the company find innovative, unique solutions, ultimately taking it to the next level of efficiency.
