The working environment is considered to be the principal cause of depression and stress. The case study analysis depicts Michael’s stress sufferings at work; being a 40-year-old experienced airline pilot, the man completely devoted himself to his work. The analysis of possible causes leading to stress and depression is based on the disclosure of Michael’s problems in the family. It is necessary to underline the fact that recent divorce and no opportunities to see his children as frequently as he wanted to, resulted in constant worries and much stress. The breakage of Michael’s 15-year marriage appeared to be a true life disaster; his working schedule does not allow him to be with his two little children, 12 and 10, though he understands that in case of losing his job and destroying the career, Michael will be unable to support his kids and the purchased townhouse. As a result of profound pressure connected with family and financial problems, Michael suffers sharp stresses.
Constant stresses of the pilot impacted his way of life; it is necessary to stress that Michael’s self-esteem was shattered due to the divorce; besides, his attitude to the work of all his life was completely changed. He stopped perceiving it as a favorite job, but as a duty to be performed in order to support his children. An inconvenient schedule did not allow Michael to see his children, that is why the man lived in an atmosphere of constant depression. It should be noted that stresses led to chest pain sufferings becoming more and more frequent. This health problem appeared to be the real threat to the person’s life because he has no means and time to take care of himself.
The case study analysis gave an opportunity to examine all possible adjustments to the problematic situation experienced by Michael. It should be noted that the basic problem of the person is concentrated around his personal moral instability; Michaels’ inner sufferings and fear of having no opportunity to be close to his children caused worrying and stress. It is necessary to state that the decision of internal psychological breakages will result in his life stabilization; Michael is to consult specialists in case of disability to tackle the problem personally. Despite the fact that he has problems at work, it should be noted that Michael has opportunities to see his children. (O’hara, 2005).
One should underline the idea that the depth of the problem lies in the human sub-consciousness; Michael does not realize that he I the reflection of his personal stresses. Taking into account the theory developed by Freud, the human mind is divided into three layers including conscious, subconscious, and unconscious; this aspect can become an explanation for Michael’s frequent worrying on the subconscious level. Freud compared the mind with an iceberg in which only the highest layer is visible, it is called the conscious, and the bulk of the iceberg is covered with what Freud referred to as subconscious and unconscious. So, one should state, that people suffer stress as a result of their inner problems and moral breakages, which they are unaware of. Michael is to recharge his batteries and take care of his moral and physical state in order to avoid suffering.
It should be stressed that Michael is presented as a passive viewer of his life who just observes and suffers inevitable events of his career and family ruin. The analysis of his physical and moral state discloses the true reasons for his chest pains. It is necessary to underline the fact that Michael lost self-control and appeared to be indirectly involved in the creation of the problem. His consciousness is the key to improved self-esteem; the principal way is to come to realizations of the problem depth for the purpose of getting rid of them.
Michael chose the method of the victim; suffering chest pains he never tries to take care of his health and avoid stresses following every step of his life. One should underline the idea that to treat one’s moral make up it is necessary to find the source of the stress, that is family problems, divorce, children, and financial instability, interacted with the threat to lose his house and contact with close people. It is important to learn all the possible stress reduction techniques. One of the central methods is based on the possibility of the person to alter the situation he lives in; it means that Michael is to be always willing to compromise and be more assertive. In order to reduce stressful life the person is to be able to manage his time in a better way; it means that even if the schedule is improper or inconvenient for private plans Michael, it is necessary to organize free time spending through benefits for personal health and moral image. (O’hara, 2005).
Michael’s personal development can be illustrated on the basis of the theory of personality formulated by Carl Jung being called the psychodynamic one (Nevid & Rathus, 2005). It is necessary to stress that the thinker stressed the hereditary character of the Self and emphasized the need to consider unconscious impulses for behaviors in combination with the conscious Self. Michael’s life is not observed from the point of unconscious impulses, as he never used to stick to his inner troubles or worries. It is necessary to underline the idea that the character’s central problems lie in the depth of long improper personal development; one should note the stresses following human life at work and home are the result of gradual formation inside the human mind. It is important to stick to the subconscious level of human functioning and listen to internal troubles. The theory provided by Carl Jung is the reflection of psychological pressure. Nowadays financial instability is considered to be one of the sharpest problems faced by people; Michaels’ conscious realization of the fact that he can be unable to support his family resulted in a stressful chain of events. Negative things, feelings, and impressions are sponged by those, who never try to reject and improve their moral state. (Nevid, & Rathus, 2005).
Michael is considered to be at the stage of subconscious impact and control over the situation; it is necessary to stress that the gaps in the man’s personal development and his sticking to subconscious impulses could have provided positive feedbacks to his physical and moral health. Michaels’ pains in the chest are connected with life depression to be rejected through consulting specialists or coming to self-realization of the problem. (Nevid, & Rathus, 2005).
The causes of stress are considered to be obvious; the analysis of the case study gave an opportunity to investigate the stages of Michael’s personal development and identify the true causes for his moral breakages. In case of no family problems and enough salary for supporting his family, Michaels could have avoided a lot of dangers to his health. It should be noted that he is under the threat of death; current situations are considered to be of much importance for the man’s future. Contemporary condition is considered to be too difficult to cope with it personally, so, Michael is to ask for additional help on the part of psychologists and close people to support him at a difficult period. It is necessary to underline the idea, that people are to take control over their moral state in order to avoid stress and depressions being the source of many serious diseases.
