Importance of Civility and Collaboration for Nurse Students
Civility and teamwork are critical to effective healthcare collaboration and profoundly influence the roles of both students and nurses within the interdisciplinary team. As a student, participating in a collaborative, compliant environment can greatly improve learning outcomes. In an environment where civility prevails, students feel respected and entrusted to contribute their opinions and perspectives. Collaboration allows learners to gain exposure to various specialties and approaches to patient care, broadening their understanding and skill set. Moreover, witnessing respectful communication among team members sets a positive example, shaping professional conduct and fostering a culture of mutual consideration and support as they transition into their nursing roles (Ota et al., 2022).
For nurses, civility and collaboration are critical to fulfilling their role on the healthcare team. Nurses serve as the linchpin of patient care, coordinating across disciplines to provide holistic, patient-centered care. In a collaborative environment, nurses can virtually advocate for their patients, drawing on input from other team members to design comprehensive care plans (Ota et al., 2022). Moreover, nurses play an essential role in modeling and fostering civility within the team, creating a positive work culture that improves job satisfaction and patient outcomes.
The Importance of the Nurse’s Role for the Team
The nurse’s role on the team is multifaceted and key in ensuring the delivery of safe and effective patient care. In the first scenario, with less structure and teamwork, communication among team members appears fragmented and uncivil. There are instances of interruptions, dismissive behavior, and frustration, which can impede effective collaboration and patient care. For example, when discussing medication adaptations for Mr. Potter, there is a lack of transparency and coordination, with the pharmacist proposing a difference without proper consultation with the rest of the team (Creighton University, 2013a). This lack of cooperation can lead to errors or misconceptions in patient care.
In contrast, the second scenario shows a more organized and collaborative approach to patient care. Communication is more structured, with team members actively listening to one another and providing constructive feedback. For instance, when discussing medication changes, the pharmacist consults with the rest of the team to ensure everyone is on the same page and that conclusions are made collectively based on the patient’s needs (Creighton University, 2013b).
Effective communication positively impacts patient care by facilitating cooperation, reducing errors, and improving patient outcomes. By sharing knowledge, discussing interventions, and coordinating care, the team can provide holistic, patient-centered care that addresses Mr. Potter’s medical issues and his psychosocial and spiritual needs. This coordinated approach ultimately leads to better patient outcomes and greater satisfaction.
