Introduction
Perseus, a Greek demi-god, is one of the most known and loved heroes in mythology. The recent movie Clash of the Titans (2010), which retells the story of Perseus, proves the fact that his bravery is still not forgotten. Most likely Perseus is still so popular and discussed today because he is always the favorite. Not only were there multiple heroic deeds on his account but he was liked by both gods and mere people (“Perseus,” n.d.). Perseus is a great example of a courageous man that has been used as a role model for ages. For example, he killed the wide-known monster Medusa, which has helped his character stay on the top of popularity. Moreover, today, such a story can be made in a product that can be sold with 100% guaranteed success.
Main body
It seems like his story did not fade with time because Greek mythology is almost on the same level of entertainment as fairytale stories. What is more, Perseus, as half-god half-human, uses his powers for the protection of people helpless against ancient monsters, instead of being arrogant and high-class about his godly nature. It attracts more fans onto his side than Greek gods, who sometimes we’re not as nice to humans according to mythology.
However, there are a few moments that were altered in Clash of the Titans specifically for the viewers. First of all, Perseus defeats Kraken instead of Cetus, a fish-like sea monster from Greek myths (Carr, 2014). Kraken is originally from a completely different realm of Norse mythology, but most likely it was used because the viewer might be more familiar with it than Cetus. Furthermore, with numerous enormous tentacles, Kraken looks more impressive and terrifying than a fish-like Titan Cetus. Another altered element is Pegasus that Perseus mounts in the movie. The flying horse has different origins in Greek mythology, but Perseus needed a ride to cover long distances in Clash of the Titans, so the creators used loved by everyone Pegasus.
Conclusion
The character traits reused in the movie are Perseus’ bravery and amazing strength. People are counting on him, so the demi-god uses his gifts to ignore threats and do unbelievable deeds, such as killing Medusa and saving Andromeda from the sea monster. There is not even the slightest hint of doubt in this hero when he sees that someone needs his help. These traits were represented in the movie like they are known from mythology.
