Comparing Practical and Design-Based Science Teaching Approaches and the Role of Structured Instruction

Check for Understanding

The student began to understand the complexity of the environment and its processes in both articles by observing, sharing, and considering the questions they were asked. The approaches to teaching and learning science in Sterling & Hargrove (2014) are more practical than in Ehlers et al. (2015). Sterling & Hargrove (2014) suggest studying the environment and directly conducting tests for nitrates, air temperature, or pH. Instead, the training proposed by Ehlers et al. (2015) focuses more on design and gap analysis.

Both articles describe the actions of students and teachers; this is especially evident in the example of studies and data gathering, as well as practical outlets for teachers and students to conduct research. The articles describe filtration and mechanical construction through active participation in designing and creating a model that changed dirty water. This is an integral part of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for mathematics. Ehlers & Coughlin (2015) explain the importance of incorporating the CCSS for conducting reading, writing, listening, and speaking experiments. This is because national development programs are said to have a comprehensive impact on student development.

Reflection

I believe structured instruction is necessary to ensure students learn specific topics comprehensively, especially in technical and life sciences. In mathematics, I suppose obvious instruction is necessary for students to learn the basic rules of arithmetic, which are the basis for their further learning of algebra and geometry. In social studies, explicit instruction helps students understand historical events and their significance. I think it helps to develop critical thinking, which is essential in science to analyze data. Therefore, the use of CCSS is essential in my opinion.

Application

Integrated learning in the science classroom will promote students’ ability to use research to gain an appreciation of their surroundings. This strategy would highlight the links between many courses and inspire students to draw parallels between what they are studying in science and other subject areas. The day is structured to allow students to ask questions, conduct experiments, and analyze data. They would learn to think critically and creatively, using scientific principles as a foundation for problem-solving in all areas of their lives. Integrated learning differs from instruction in individual subject areas because it focuses on the connections between subjects rather than teaching them individually.
