Comparison of Deming’s 14 Principles and Baldrige’s 11 Core Values for Quality Management

Introduction

Quality management is an integral process that should be present in every organization. With the help of this element, one can achieve tremendous success in producing products that will meet high standards. There are standards such as Deming’s 14 Principles and Baldrige’s 11 Core Values to confirm all the requirements. Description of Options

Dr. W. Edwards Deming wrote 14 principles that can help maintain product quality. These principles are to create and pursue a common goal of the organization. This is an important aspect that can help motivate employees to provide better quality through the efforts of employees and their desire to try (Chaturvedi, 2020).

In addition, an essential aspect of the principles is to change the company’s entire philosophy and improve the production system. In this way, it is possible to ensure that the company begins a complete transformation process since these changes will allow the organization to begin to take a new approach to goods and the process of production (Chaturvedi, 2020). Encouraging the education of employees and eliminating barriers for them is also an integral part of the principles that characterize them as employee-oriented.

The Baldrige Performance Excellence Framework is designed to empower companies to improve their capabilities and achieve better levels of quality. However, Baldrige’s values differ significantly from the principles discussed above. Their primary focus is leadership, which must ensure all essential processes in the company (Ghafooret al., 2021). With a customer-focused approach and product excellence, one of Baldrige’s core values is a focus on strategic planning for the future. Thus, it provides instructions that can help improve the internal organization.

Comparison

Deming’s 14 Principles and Baldrige’s 11 Core Values aim to improve product quality. However, despite this common goal, they are aimed at different approaches to this target. Deming’s principles are more prescriptive and focus on changing the company as much as possible (Chaturvedi, 2020). This is a hallmark that Baldrige’s Values does not have, as it aims to improve leadership and internal structure (Ghafoor et al., 2021).

However, the common aspect is that both strategies emphasize customer orientation through providing the best service and improving product quality. In addition, in both approaches, it is possible to consider a general view of the improvement and development of employees who should become prominent persons for quality improvement. Ensuring innovation is also present in both strategies, as this aspect is seen as a side effect of quality.

Higher Quality

Ensuring higher quality can depend on many variables that companies have. However, it can be said that Baldrige’s 11 Core Values are more universal and can provide better quality assurance in organizational products. This is justified by the fact that Deming’s 14 Principles require a complete change in the organization’s philosophy, which requires a severe reformation of work (Chaturvedi, 2020). Thus, it poses a risk of loss of productivity and employee confidence. This can happen in companies that have built certain traditions and values for a long time and will now be forced to abandon them. This can negatively affect corporate ethics and, as a result, employee effort and quality. The Baldrige values have a softer effect with subtle changes that can be made gradually, improving quality.

Conclusion

Baldrige’s 11 Core Values and Deming’s 14 Principles are both sustainable concepts and provide different approaches to formulating a quality improvement strategy. Each strategy has similarities and differences that present them in unique ways. Their detailed study concluded that Baldrige values can have the best effect in ensuring quality improvement. This occurs due to a greater focus on leadership and a lack of changes in the company’s internal organization.
