Since ancient times, individuals have been trying to understand life and its meaning and provide humanity with answers to various philosophical questions. For instance, Rene Descartes, who is a French theorist, scientist, and mathematician, created the statement “I think, therefore I am” in order to explain the concept of human existence. Thus, this paper will demonstrate my understanding of this proposition and identify its fundamentality.
After researching Descartes’ thoughts deeper, I can state that his idea means that the existence of humans is true because they can think and have an opinion about something. Even though people live in a society where they cannot be sure of the accuracy of any process, action, or conclusion, the presence of an individual in the universe cannot be doubted. In general, people can be sure that they exist since they are able to think, create opinions, and question various concepts and claims.
The statement is fundamental to Descartes’s method because it matches his philosophy and explains his view on the world. From the very beginning of his work, the scientist bases his thought on the theory of doubt by suggesting that nothing that is felt or perceived by a human is necessarily real. However, the only thing that always remained true is consciousness that continually creates beliefs, misunderstandings, and uncertainty about specific phenomena.
Overall, it can be stated that by spending years on understanding the concept of life, philosophers made a considerable contribution to realizing the world and its processes. Rene Descartes was able to deliver the idea that human consciousness can develop various perceptions of reality; therefore, it is true. Consequently, the presented reflection discussed my personal opinion about Descartes’ belief and explained why it is fundamental.
