A leadership style is a vital aspect of management, which contributes to the effectiveness a manager. However, the leadership style adopted is largely dependent on the organization and the personal traits of the leader (The East-West centre, 2009).
The second article highlights how a leader adopts a leadership style. The process commences with entry into an organization. The recruit is subsequently indoctrinated. This process is vital since it teaches the recruit the values that people adhere to in to in that organization. The article discusses the development of a leader in the American Navy. From the entry of recruits, the navy commences nurturing potential leaders. They are key aspects of establishing a leader. First, personal traits will contribute significantly to the emergence of leadership traits. Such characteristics include the reaction to situations that pressure people psychologically. Overall, an organizational culture will dictate the leadership style that a leader adopts. The military adhere to certain codes, which entail honour, courage and service to the nation. The above values denote the organization norms. As such, the navy’s culture is built around such values. Failure to adhere to such values would be detrimental to recruits Based on the tasks that this organization undertakes; leaders have to adhere to certain protocol. This will limit leaders’ ability to apply their instincts or intuition (Bishop, 2010).
Military personnel have to adhere to certain established protocol. Failure to do so, allow leaders in the organization to utilize coercion to ensure compliance. The environment changes what is required of a leader. In the political environment, popularity is vital, while in the military it is not. In formal organizations, popularity may contribute minimally to a leader’s success. However, the capability of a leader to deliver the required results will be vital. Additionally, being a role model to junior staff is vital. However, in the Navy the protocol is strict. Therefore, failure to adhere to guidance would be detrimental (Groysberg & Slind, 2012).
Leadership is complex, and leaders encounter countless variables in decision-making. Leadership in the navy is rigid. Leaders in this organization are not at liberty to utilize their instincts owing to protocol. This is an aspect of the navy, which may limit the growth of leadership qualities. However, the strict policies ensure certain results are realized. This article highlights the significance of leaders in organizations. Leaders provide direction based on the power bestowed to them through their positions in an entity. Leadership is an aspect of an individual, which can be nurtured. However, an individual has to have some basic characteristics. Education and experience are vital since leaders make countless decisions for their followers. Lack of experience would result in poor choices that would affect numerous people ( Groysberg & Slind, 2012).
