Foley Catheter Use in Surgical Patients: Stakeholders

The paper identifies appropriate stakeholders related to prevention of complications of foley catheter use in surgical patients at Kendall Regional Medical Center.

Registered Nurse (RN)

Position in the Organizational Hierarchy

RNs are in the middle level of the hierarchy and report to a nurse manager (Hierarchy Nursing Jobs, n.d.).

Influence on the Practicum Project

One of the essential roles played by the RN at Kendall Regional Medical Center is bedside care necessary for complications prevention of Foley catheter use in surgical patients. RNs should provide continuous control of patients reporting to the corresponding specialists. Therefore, their role would considerably influence my project.

Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

Position in the Organizational Hierarchy

Nurse ICU nurses are placed in the middle of the nursing job hierarchy. As a rule, they report to a director nurse or manager (Hierarchy Nursing Jobs, n.d.).

Influence on the Practicum Project

Patients with Foley catheters need appropriate intensive care. Their role contributes to better patient outcomes. “Nurses often described translating physician communication to the patient and/or family members and vice versa” (Slatore et al., 2012, p. 413). In the intensive care unit, the patient mostly communicates with a nurse rather than a doctor.

Patients told ICU nurses about changes in their state, new feelings, reactions to treatment, etc. Carrying out plenty of activities for the care and treatment of the patients, nurses ensure their comfort. Intensive care unit nurses, having learned all the peculiarities of the care of patients, know the features of the clinical manifestations, their specific diseases, and methods of care. Considering this role, it is significant to implement ICU nurses’ performance in my practicum project.

Advanced Practice Nurse (APN)

Position in the Organizational Hierarchy

APNs are in the middle level of the nursing job profile. They report directly to a supervisor nurse (Hierarchy Nursing Jobs, n.d.).

Influence on the Practicum Project

A specialization of APNs at Kendall Regional Medical Center focuses on both advanced clinical and theoretical knowledge to enhance the quality of health care. It is especially necessary for surgical patients as they are at risk of developing complications. The role of APNs would deepen and structure the research for my practicum project. Skills and experience of APNs’ are rather important in problem solving and evidence-based decision making. Therefore, they also conduct researches to remain aware of the current situation in the corresponding area.

Cardiology Nurse (CN)

Position in the Organizational Hierarchy

CNs are in the middle level of the hierarchy and report to a nurse manager (Hierarchy Nursing Jobs, n.d.).

Influence on the Practicum Project

CNs are responsible for helping to support patients’ circulatory system. According to Stephan et al. (2008), “Noninfectious included cardiovascular events, such as pulmonary embolism, stroke, and acute pulmonary edema” (p. 1545). In this connection, it is essential to initiate timely examinations by a cardiology nurse.

Nurse Director

Position in the Organizational Hierarchy

A nurse director is in the senior-level position. He manages all the nursing staff (Hierarchy Nursing Jobs, n.d.).

Influence on the Practicum Project

The nurse director is a very responsible position as all the work of nurses of any hospital depends on correctly managed daily nurse activities. As far as professional director nurse works with the senior medical staff, the work of middle and junior staff depends on them. The key responsibilities of the nurse director at Kendall Regional Medical Center are the rational organization of personnel operation and the provision of timely implementation of treatment.

Also, they provide training for middle and junior medical staff at the hospital. Adequate monitoring and coordination guaranteed by the nurse director lead to efficient health care delivery (Milton et al., 2008). Seeing the above characteristics, it becomes evident that the nurse director’s role might impact my project practicum.
