Four Functions of Pastoral Care in Christian Doctrine and Jesus’ Example

Introduction

It is important to note that pastoral care holds a foundational position in Christian doctrine. It provides spiritual guidance, support, and healing for individuals throughout their faith journey. The given analysis will focus on the four primary functions of pastoral care: guiding, reconciling, Healing, and sustaining. Jesus’s interaction with the Samaritan woman will also be analyzed. Jesus showcases how Christians ought to practice all functions.

Four Functions of Pastoral Care

Firstly, guiding in Christian care involves offering direction and wisdom to help individuals deal with challenges in life. It is about aiding them in mobilizing their internal resources so they can face their troubles head-on (The Ministry, 1973). Guiding also requires good understanding skills, such as sensing, feeling, listening, and observing (Henager, 2001).

Secondly, reconciling is the act of healing broken relationships, and on a larger scale, it refers to the connection between God and humanity. For example, in Mark’s gospel, Jesus is someone who regularly forgives and reconciles, but He also gives warnings as part of this function (Adamson, 2016). This is the main reason why the reconciling function is essential in Christian care since the Son of God practices Himself.

Thirdly, as I understand it, healing in Christian care aims to address both emotional and physical wounds. In other words, Healing aims to overcome impairments and restore an individual to their actual state of being (The Ministry, 1973). Lastly, sustaining is the act of providing strength, consolation, and support to those who are in distress. As a result, sustaining can be best described in the sentiment that it is entirely normal to be hurt (Kellemen, 2019). Redemption, consolidation, consolation, and preservation are essential in the overall sustaining function.

John 4:1-26

Throughout John 4:1-26, Jesus demonstrates all four functions of pastoral care in some shape or form. Jesus says: “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water” (Holy Bible, New International Version, 1973/2011, John 4:10). The intervention type is Guiding since Jesus leads the woman towards spiritual insight. Jesus’ goal is to direct her to recognize Him as the source of eternal spiritual nourishment. Jesus states: “The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true” (Holy Bible, New International Version, 1973/2011, John 4:18). It is a Reconciling intervention, because Jesus showcases truth without condemnation and enables introspection, and Jesus aims to bring the woman to self-awareness.

The intervention of Healing is also present by symbolizing spiritual rejuvenation through the eternal water. Jesus says: “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst” (Holy Bible, New International Version, 1973/2011, John 4:13). Jesus’ objective is to offer the woman spiritual restoration and eternal life. Jesus states: “A time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem…God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth” (Holy Bible, New International Version, 1973/2011, John 4:21). The teaching is a Sustaining intervention since it offers a renewed perspective on genuine worship; hence, Jesus intends to nurture and sustain her faith.

Conclusion

In conclusion, pastoral care is best demonstrated by Jesus in His interactions. The four functions provide a holistic approach to Christian care since they address spiritual, physical, and emotional needs. It is critical to ensure that these principles remain central in Christian ministry, as they embody the very essence of Jesus’ teachings and His desire for humanity to be drawn closer to God.
