Gender Inequality in Domestic Labor and Workplace Challenges

Gender Roles and Unequal Distribution of Domestic Labor

In response to why unpaid domestic labor falls so unequally on women and their problems, the article by Mainardi (2010) states that men do not like sharing house chores. The author states that their psychology leads them to believe that household chores are meant for women. The article provides possible solutions for this challenge, which challenge men to confront these traditional norms and help women handle household chores. It is important to dismantle bad structures within society to promote gender equality.

Challenges of Women’s Leadership and Masculinity in the Military

The article by Abbe (2020) states that women in the military face challenges due to the influence of traditional masculinity factors. For women’s leadership to be accepted, they must show warmth and competence. Women require self-monitoring and motivation to adapt to the cognitive burdens they experience in their profession. To address this problem, male leaders are challenged to increase the number of women in the military to change the culture.

Resistance to Gender Equality and the Role of Social Movements

The article by MacKinnon (2019) addresses the blowback that affects the progression in addressing issues of gender inequality. MacKinnon (2019) states that it is challenging for women to bring about change, as they often face resistance from fellow women who want to maintain their perceived authority. This fear is created by mistakes that make it difficult to challenge established norms, and it will result in negative repercussions. To solve this problem, it is appropriate to establish movements like #MeToo to confront fears about gender inequality by challenging men’s dominance in society.

Personal Reflection

An example from my life involves my parents, who work full-time jobs. My parents’ income and expenses were shared equally between them. However, I point out that there is inequality in my parents’ marriage, since my mother does most of the housework, like cleaning or childcare. This unequal distribution of household chores is related to societal norms that women are natural homemakers and caregivers. To address this challenge, both parents should share household chores equally.

Summary

In conclusion, women face challenges related to domestic labor. These challenges escalate because men do not like sharing household chores because they consider it a woman’s role, and some societal norms prevent them from engaging in domestic labor. This is affecting the development and mistreatment of women in their workplace. Men are advised to help women handle domestic chores to address this challenge.
