Introduction
“Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl” is an autobiographical book written by Harriet Jacobs, a work written in the cultural context of the last years of slavery and shortly before the Civil War broke out. The book depicted the brutal reality of slavery in the United States, which made Harriet Jacobs one of the most powerful abolitionist figures of the time.
The story is unique, as it is told by an enslaved woman who is also a mother. This perspective is often unheard, as the voices of black women, especially in the times of slavery, were neglected, and their stories were rarely at the center of public attention. Jacobs’ book provides valuable insights into the experiences of an enslaved woman and the diversity of how African Americans experienced slavery overall.
Evaluation of Harriet Jacobs’ Perspectives
The author succeeds in conveying the experiences of an enslaved woman in such a realistic way that it can shock the reader. For example, she provides insight into the sexual exploitation that enslaved women had to suffer from. Harriet Jacobs describes how her master abused her: “My master met me at every turn, reminding me that I belonged to him, and swearing by heaven and earth that he would compel me to submit to him” (Jacobs 46). Such a story was revolutionary for the historical context of the time, as discussing sexual abuse, especially the abuse inflicted by the master, was completely taboo.
The author’s perspective is clearly completely different from my own, as I could never understand what it is like to go through slavery and experience sexual abuse at the same time. Jacobs’ book helped me learn a lot about the African American community and its diversity. Enslaved Africans were often perceived as one group with similar experiences and little diversity; however, this idea proved to be far from the reality. In her book, Jacob discusses the experiences of other enslaved individuals, which are incredibly different depending on the enslaved people’s backgrounds.
Conclusion
To conclude, Harriet Jacobs’ autobiographical book offers a unique perspective on the survival of a black woman during slavery. The author of the book went through the double oppression, both based on her sex and the color of her skin. The book is a valuable source of information on the diversity of the experiences of African Americans during slavery, as well as the cultural diversity that still existed among enslaved people who managed to keep their African traditions.
