Hiring Criteria for a Restaurant Server

A waiter is an increasingly popular job among people of all ages. Some people consider serving tables to be an easy task; however, being a waiter demands considerable skills, qualities, and abilities. First, they must perform clear and concise verbal and written communication both with the administration, team, and guests (Forketers, n. d.). Second, the skill of conflict resolution is demanded to ensure high-quality customer service (Forketers, n. d.). Third, a candidate must be physically strong and have stamina since the profession requires much lifting and carrying heave trays. Finally, basic knowledge of math is also essential to avoid misconceptions.

The primary method to hire a decent waiter is to use paper applications since they are logically structured and allow an employer to see all information about a potential worker. Moreover, they allow tracing applicants’ working experience and general background. Additionally, interviews are a perfect method to assess the candidate and validate their qualities. They let a manager explore one’s intentions, test confidence, reveal weak spots, and eventually decide if a person suits to be a waiter. Typically, the process takes up to several weeks and does not require additional costs.

The Olive Garden’s manager claimed that the selection criteria include stress resistance, persistence, hard-working, high politeness, and charisma. She also pointed out that being a waiter at their venue demands loyalty and responsibility since their reputation is valued and they look for long-term employees. Moreover, Italian cuisine knowledge is beneficial for the candidate but not necessary since they ensure each potential worker takes training courses. The company also uses job applications and interviews for hiring staff. Therefore, choosing personnel approaches is similar in a way that the qualities and characteristics mentioned coincide. Hence, there are no reasons to doubt the efficacy of the methods selected.
