Introduction
The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is a respected organization that has worked with the US Armed Forces for over a hundred years. This essay will analyze the history of the USACE from 1916 to 1990.
History and Contributions of USACE
The United States Army Corps of Engineers has always been vital to the country. From 1916 to 1990, USACE had very high priorities regarding engineering projects. During the First World War, the Corps of Engineers was directed to protect the country from destruction, using its knowledge and engineering skills to produce bombs and other weapons. At the same time, the Corps of Engineers built new roads and bridges to help the army move and maintain logistics.
After the war, the Corps of Engineers continued to provide technical support to the US Army, but with the task of supporting and developing civilian activities in the US. For example, in the 1940s, the Corps of Engineers created projects to build hydroelectric power plants and dams to provide a stable source of electricity for the US. In the 1960s, the Corps of Engineers began projects to study and develop natural protection systems, such as rivers and lakes, to prevent potential natural disasters and protect the area from potential environmental threats. USACE also participated in infrastructure repair and restoration projects, including roads, bridges, and water and sewage systems (Patterson, 2018). In the 1990s, the Corps of Engineers participated in projects establishing and supporting environmental protection systems, research, and renewable energy sources such as wind and solar.
