Introduction
The honor codes in any organization are written to maintain ethical conduct among the members of that company or institution. Honor is defined as a “fundamental attribute of character” and “a virtue which impels loyalty and courage, truthfulness and self-respect, justice and generosity” (Norwich University, n.d., para. 3). For example, if a student has an honest, transparent, and truthful attitude in terms of academic performance and interaction with the faculty and classmates, one can be considered to follow the honor code. However, if a person plagiarizes, falsifies data and documentation, cheats on exams, and abuses library resources, that individual should be subjected to a hearing from the Academic Integrity Committee (Norwich University, 2022). Similarly, if the government of Iran violates an international code, specific punitive sanctions may be applied. Indeed, the report by the panel of experts of the United Nations (UN) Security Council revealed the Islamic Republic of Iran’s noncompliance with the rules regarding the development and transportation of nuclear weapons.
The Honor Code of Norwich University
The honor code of Norwich University states that students should not cheat, steal, lie, or tolerate such wrongful behavior from others. If this code is applied to the acts of the government of Iran, it can be seen that the politicians of this country would fail to be considered as those who followed the abovementioned statements. Specifically, they lied to the global community about the use and development of nuclear armor in the Republic of Iran (Security Council, 2012). Iranian program for the development of ballistic missiles was still ongoing despite the 1929(2010) prohibition (Security Council, 2012). Furthermore, it was reported that Iran launched the Rasad satellite in June 2011 (Security Council, 2012). Moreover, the panel’s investigation showed that the government of this country continued to ship arms illegally to Syria and some other sites of military conflicts (Security Council, 2012). This type of conduct places a tremendous threat to international security and global peace. Thus, the members of the Security Council decided that specific economic sanctions should be implemented on Iran to limit opportunities for expanding its nuclear program, which the Iranian government claimed to be nonviolent in nature.
Similar to academic penalties applied by the Academic Integrity Committee to students that performed a dishonest act, the UN’s Security Council can place sanctions on countries that violate the accepted rules. For example, in the case of Iran, the Council’s measures were an embargo on nuclear missiles activity, a travel ban, a freeze of assets, various business restrictions, and a prohibition of bunkering service (Security Council, 2012). All these sanctions had a significant negative impact on this country’s economy, resulting in the currency devaluation and the rise of prices (Security Council, 2012). In fact, the outcomes of this approach had a positive effect because the government of Iran agreed to reinitiate the discussion with the UN about resolving this situation.
Conclusion
In summary, following the honor code is an essential duty of any student who is a part of academia and an obligation of any country that becomes a member of an international organization. If one violates this code, the consequences may be severe. For example, when the government of Iran launched the nuclear program and transported arms to Syria illegally, the United Nations Security Council responded with sanctions that led to a substantial economic recession in this country. The overall outcome was that Iran agreed to restart the discussion to reach a consensus on that issue.
