The twenty-first century is believed to be the age of human rights, freedom, justice, and equality. However, it is impossible to consider the battle won and finished while there are still those who suffer from the violation of human rights. Not everyone knows about one of the largest ethnic groups in Ethiopia, the Oromo nation, which struggles for freedom every day. For decades, Oromo people have been fighting and dying for their land. Recently, many activists were imprisoned, and more than eighty people were murdered, including a famous Ethiopian singer and songwriter. The purpose of this paper is to draw the public’s attention to the terrifying events that are happening in Ethiopia and demand justice and freedom for the Oromo people.
To begin with, it is necessary to tell about Hachalu Hundessa, probably the most powerful political voice of the Oromo ethnic group who was murdered on June 29. From his young years, he was increasingly politicized, and after increasing his knowledge about the history of Ethiopia, he began his musical career and became a political symbol of the Oromo people’s aspirations. Thinking only about human rights, he did his best to achieve justice and equality but was shot dead on Monday evening, probably by one of those who disagreed with him politically. After his death, his friends and supporters decided to pay tribute to him and took him to the streets. It resulted in the security forces killing about eighty arresting more than thirty people, including Jawar Mohammed.
Jawar Mohammeda the prominent politician who was leading calls for more rights for the Oromo people. He was arrested for trying to stop the transportation of Hachalu’s body to his native town of Ambo and return it to the capital. Jawar Mohammed is not a criminal, and fighting for freedom is not a crime. Hence, he and thirty other activists have to be released from prison.
To draw a conclusion, one may say that justice and equality need to become a part of Ethiopia. While the Oromo people cannot use their human rights and have to die and become arrested for trying to stand for themselves, there is no bright future for this world. All humans have to pay attention to this injustice and do their best to help the suffering nation. In unity, there is strength, and support is the only way to stop the violation of human rights in Ethiopia.
