Implementation of the IOM Future in Nursing

Introduction

It should be noted that The Future of Nursing Report was developed to cover several goals and objectives. Importantly, it intends to encourage healthcare practitioners and nurses to take on greater responsibility and exercise autonomy by taking on leadership positions. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has financed the evolvement of the program as a reaction to the need to conduct reorganization within the nursing occupation. The document covers such integral aspects as the education of healthcare specialists to possess the necessary expertise, the collaboration of nurses, and the greater engagement of the stakeholders. Notably, effective policymaking is an important part of the report. The purpose of this paper is to review the work on the report and its significance in the reorganization of the nursing profession.

Discussion

The Institute of Medicine (IOM), together with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), has initiated the project. The associates have conducted an analysis of the industry’s potential in terms of quality improvements, enhanced approachability, and expenses reduction. The core of the project can be concluded to the evaluation of the nursing workforce regarding their capacity to satisfy the needs of the population (“The future of nursing, leading change, advancing health,” 2011). Apart from that, the report has come up with the national guidelines in terms of the educational system and service provision within the setting of the personnel deficit.

The research conducted by the committee has revealed that nurses do not possess equal chances and opportunities for receiving the necessary education and training. This educational inequality has led to the fact that nurses exhibit varying levels of competence, which affects the quality of care provision. Therefore, it was assumed that immediate reformations are needed to improve the situation due to the fact that nurses represent the front-line service and have the maximum quantity of contacts with clients, which requires them to deliver high-quality care in a multiplicity of settings.

These revelations have driven the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee Initiative to work with the IOM on the report, which would cover the essential domains of the reformations (“The future of nursing, leading change, advancing health,” 2011). The report pursues such goals as improvements in the quality of education and training of nurses; it stimulates their autonomy and encourages taking on leadership roles. In addition, it ensured that medical errors and minimized and provides training opportunities for post-licensure. However, most importantly, it orients at creating the healthcare setting in which nurses can operate effectively in an environment with a nurse shortage, which addresses one of the most critical issues faced by the industry.

Importance

It should be stressed that a great number of people and specialists have reviewed the initiative. It has succeeded in raising the attention of leaders and stakeholders in the industry. The increased attention has encouraged them to respond to it at both the local and the national levels. The recommendations proposed by the report have been implemented in terms of the key aspects of nursing practice. In particular, such crucial areas as approachability and quality of service provision and the significance of delivering secure care have been reviewed (“The future of nursing, leading change, advancing health,” 2011). It can be stated that the quality improvements taking place in the state are the consequence of the report findings implementation.

Nursing Practice

Notably, the report specified that nursing practice should be based on the level of specialist’s training. Therefore, it is required that nurses take on only those responsibilities that lie within their current educational capacity. The IOM has initiated the policy determining that individuals can choose the healthcare institution that corresponds the best with their health needs and financial opportunities (Duffy, 2013). Thus, care provision has undergone significant changes due to the quality reformations in nursing roles.

Nursing Education

The report has initiated changes in the educational system as well. To be more precise, it ensured that nurses could progress smoothly in their educational path since the barriers that have hindered their progression earlier have been removed. The changes in the educational policies have ensured that nurses will perform duties in accordance with their level of training and will be able to progress further with the new educational opportunities that are available to them (Duffy, 2013). After the implementation of the initiative, educational institutions of the USA have evidenced a significant increase in the enrollment levels at Baccalaureate.

Workforce Development

The initiative has altered the evolvement of the workforce in healthcare institutions. It has determined that efficient staff planning implies effective data collection (Duffy, 2013). This approach will allow enhancing the informational infrastructure within organizations and will assist in planning through improved information flows. Apart from that, the guidelines developed in the report specified that new educational opportunities would enable nurses to take on leadership roles within organizations.

State-Based Action Coalitions

State-based coalitions work on reinforcing nurses and management. Healthcare organizations, clients, businesses work jointly to achieve the goals of the report. The core of collaboration (Campaign for Action) lies in the creation of the vision that all nurses will comprehend and accept as a guiding point in their work. It implies sustaining the culture of health by all the key stakeholders (Mark, 2014). This vision holds nurses accountable and considers them promoters and procurers of quality care for the population.

Florida Action Coalition

The crucial initiatives spearheaded by Florida’s action coalition are Transforming Nursing Education and Building a More Diverse Nursing Workforce (“Florida action coalition,” n.d.). They are aimed at creating equal opportunities to quality education for all nurses eager to progress in their profession. The Florida Blue Foundation collaborates with the Coalition and provides financial assistance to ensure safety and quality of care provision. The barriers to advancement are related to the lack of motivation among individuals studying nursing. To overcome the barriers, the collaborators have initiated a program that provides perspective students with grants. Apart from motivating, it ensures that those receiving grants will proceed cooperating with the Coalition in their work on improving healthcare.

Conclusion

Thus, it can be concluded that Future of Nursing Report is a crucial element of the progress in the health care industry. The report has evidenced the need for quality improvements in the provision of care related to the work of nurses. Nurses spend a lot of time with patients and deliver various services to them. Therefore, it is essential that specialists can provide assistance within the limits of their expertise and have an opportunity to progress in their career smoothly with the help of new training opportunities. It is the role of all states to comply with the recommendations provided by the report regarding the education of nurses, their practice, and workplace development to ensure that the improvements are implementable.
