Introduction
Primitive reflexes may impede the child’s development and negatively influence on social and educational realms of a child. These reflexes are primary developmental patterns, as well as postural control. They, in turn, are integrated into more complex patterns establishing voluntary movements and skills. Integration deficiency of the primitive reflexes may cause poor fixation from far to near and poor eye movements in total. Further, visual memory, hand-eye coordination, and visual coordination may be negatively affected. In this work, the general components of primitive infant reflexes, including their purpose, typical progression, the process of integration, and impacts on voluntary movement, will be discussed.
Main text
The primitive reflexes constitute a complex compound of movement patterns. During the prenatal period, they emerge in the newborn and signal the neurological development process of a child. The reflexes constitute an automatized action that does not involve thinking. These reflexes are of importance in the birthing process; they facilitate the adjustment process and help to build a foundation for cognitive and motor skills (Gieysztor et al. 139). As stated before, primitive infant skills constitute basic developmental patterns, and they are integrated by the higher brain centers. If the primitive reflexes are not being tested timely, they may lead to many consequences; low psychomotor skills are one of them (Gieysztor et al. 142). Reflexes integration therapy is an inherent element in improving early psychomotor skills development and preventing numerous difficulties that children may face in their social and educational life.
Conclusion
Given all mentioned above, it is important to treat the primitive reflexes properly. These reflexes, which constitute basic developmental patterns, may impede a proper child’s social and educational development processes. If not tested on an ongoing basis, they may also lead to a lowering of psychomotor and other skills. The primitive reflexes constitute essential developmental patterns that help during the birthing process and are of importance in the adjustment process, apart from being a foundation for motor and cognitive skills. Reflexes integration therapy may be useful when testing primitive reflexes.
