Sexism is a negative phenomenon meaning that individuals face various opportunities and attitudes based on their genders. MacKinnon and Fiala (2018) argue that sexism is one of many forms of discrimination that leads to inequality in society. According to The King Center (n.d.), Marin Luther King also considered sexism a manifestation of racism that could result in negative consequences for the world. Thus, it is not productive for the world that multiple women are forced to deal with gender discrimination.
One can say that sexism, sexual discrimination, and sexual abuse are systemic problems in today’s world, and the United States is no exception. According to SteelFisher et al. (2018), women experience harassment and discrimination in many areas, including healthcare, workplace, higher education, and others. For example, it is not a surprise that some women can receive lower remunerations compared to men, while others can be denied a promotion based on their gender. This state of affairs denotes that the whole institutions have strong beliefs regarding female inferiority that results in the discrimination above. It is so because men took leading roles throughout world development, and it should take much time to make society eliminate this prejudice.
Simultaneously, one should emphasize that even though the problem is systemic, it does not mitigate individual responsibility. This claim shows that everyone is responsible for their decisions and behavior, meaning that it is inadequate to justify misconduct by any systemic beliefs. It denotes that every person can make their contribution to addressing the sexual discrimination issue by controlling their actions and thoughts. If more people start mitigating sexism’s adverse effects, it will be possible to make society free from gender discrimination.
