Introduction
Presently, the rate of run-away children is increasing greatly. Many parents do not take into account that the transition period from childhood to adulthood is awkward for most teenagers, and they need special attention and a delicate way of looking at their problems. According to statistical results prepared by the National Organization of missing and Exploited Children, about 275,000 teens run away from home in 2004 (Shoemaker, 2004). Lack of attention and inability of parents to understand the problems faced by their teenage children resulted in “run away” from home.
Fear of punishment
The primary cause of running away is fear of punishment. In many situations, the world, the security, and the stability teenagers have known seem to fall apart. No matter what their age, children appear to have some universal worries and fears to be severely punished. Cardoza describes a case of escape: “Before his parents were able to punish him, he stole the family car and ran away for five days. When asked why he ran away he replied, “I was sure my parents were going to send me away for having cigarettes” (Cardoza, 2005). Many psychologists classify fear of previous punishment as being a form of trauma with special implications for children. Another cause of running away is perceived physical or emotional abuse. Exposure to domestic and community violence is difficult to determine but children who have experienced domestic violence are at risk. They leave home looking for a better and safer environment.
Lack of personal freedom
Lack of personal freedom is another cause of running away. Many adolescents seem to mature more quickly than expected by their parents. Usually, parents or guardians want to retain custody of the teenager. Most of the parents do not take into account that teenage son or daughter needs more freedom and personal life to socialize. Their anger can be expressed in many ways, from extremely emotional to quiet resentment, and running away. The urban youth is driven by trendsetters who have a major impact on them, including apparel, footwear, drinks, and other gadgets of the entertainment industry. But if parents prohibit their children to be “fashionable” or listening to music they like, it results in rebellion and escape.
Conclusion
It is possible to refute these arguments stating that parents do everything possible to educate and protect their children from mistakes. Also, teens may run away to get attention and underline the importance of problems they have. On the other hand, children do not run away from home if the family establishes warm and friendly family relations. Lack of self-image and protection are the main causes of this situation. Some teenagers need to feel that parents are scared of running away to act in their interests.
Summary
In sum, “run-away” is a form of disobedience against abuse or psychological conflict between parents and children. The generation gap supports this situation and resulted in negative consequences such as rebellion and escape. Teenagers’ spiritual and moral life is challenged and fulfilled in interpersonal encounters, in community situations.
