Standard 8): Language Arts

Writing: The students write daily to effectively communicate for various reasons and to different audiences.

Arizona Standards for Second Grade reading and writing standards according to the Arizona Department of Education

The learner will be able to:

  • Discuss and share the items in the small package (diary).
  • Read and understand the content of the selected narrative.
  • Plan or pre-write by making a model using the diary and the selected narrative
  • Come up with several other topic thoughts. Allow the learners to partner with each other and describe their best friends to each other giving a lot of details.
  • Creatively write using their diaries by creating their initial draft from their diaries.
  • Personally assess their drafts using their checklists
  • Share their stories in small groups or with partners through the writer’s seat.

Content Objective(s)

The students will creatively write about their best friends which is broad and a convenient topic.

Students will use their diaries to create a plan and write about their best friends.

Writing Objective(s)

Students will display obtained understanding of creative writing through narrative writing giving a lot of details on their best friends.

Students will fill in their diaries as the teacher assesses their writing skills.

Lesson Sequence:
The learners will be given diaries on which they will record their day to day activities with their best friends. They will be allowed to highlight the good qualities of their best friends and create a list of the common interests which they share as friends. Out of the recordings of the diaries, the learners will be able to discuss the qualities in pairs or small groups out of which they will individually write a draft on their best friends from the information gathered through the class discussions. The teacher will assess and listen to the written narrative of the learners testing their language proficiency and their vocabularies used in the writing.
Reflection:
The student’s narrative writing and presentation was a great success. The teacher made use of the various assessment methods which allows the learners to display their learning skills through their creative writing and group presentations.
