Personal and professional values help people to make their judgments in different contexts. Personal values, as a rule, embrace a person’s inner qualities and the qualities he or she wants to find in others, such as care, honesty, and sincerity. These values are formed starting from a person’s birth by people who surround him or her: family, relatives, and friends. Professional values are standards and guidelines of professional ethics that are imposed on a person by the professional organization he or she works for (Gortner, 2019). These values may be different for different professions, but adherence to them is deemed obligatory by professional organizations. Personal values satisfy a person’s needs, while professional values aim to benefit the company a person works for and society as a whole. Sometimes personal and professional values may be in conflict. For example, I have a conflict between my personal value of honesty and truthfulness and the value of confidentiality and discretion demanded by my profession.
The principle of confidentiality and privacy dictates that no information on the persons seeking advice should be disclosed to other people. However, information may be disclosed to interested parties if there is a threat to a person’s well-being (Noroozi et al., 2018). In this case, the girl is not of age, so her father has the right to know if she is going to do something dangerous and potentially harmful. So, I would inform her father of her intentions and ask him not to be hard on the girl when speaking to her. The parents have the right to know when a child plans to spend nights away from home doing something children are not allowed to do. The fact that dancing at a strip club is prohibited to persons under 18 makes the disclosure more imperative and needed.
