Introduction
The most widely accepted definition of “literacy” is that it is only a catch-all phrase for reading and writing. According to Darville, “procedures of reading and writing are constituents of forms of social organization – of social practices and the relations among people brought into being by those practices” (249). I believe that many people think that literacy and speaking are two different things; however, in my opinion, they are one and the same thing, and one pip out of the other. Speaking is directly related to literacy, and I have always understood that these things are related.
The conversational speech was of great importance in the case I will tell you about since the buyer did not communicate correctly with the cashier, which led to a conflict. I believe that in this case, it would have been possible to act much more ethically and correctly if the instigator of the conflict had thought before acting in that situation. The problem of economic literacy is also present in this situation. Many people, in my opinion, misbehave with money. Illiteracy in counting money, distributing money is as relevant in our world as ever. I try to be careful with money because it is an essential tool in our life.
Life Example
From personal experience, I observed how people sometimes behave illiterately. In the queue at the cash register, I observed a situation when the buyer tried to prove to the cashier that she gave the wrong change to the buyer, but the change was given out correctly. The buyer began to get nervous and asked for change. This suggests that the illiteracy of people can manifest itself in basic things like going to the store. Respectful communication is part of behavior and literacy, and counting is one of the primary signs of literacy. Also, the recognition of their mistakes indicates that a person assesses the situation and himself correctly. This situation influenced me so that I realized that literacy always surrounds people, and a literate person understands how to act correctly and reasonably, not to the detriment of others.
The Power of Literacy
This case shows that literacy directly affects a person’s life. A literate person is not only about knowledge of facts and competence in their specialty; it is also about ordinary things like counting money and communicating with staff. This incident influenced me in such a way that I now try to devote myself to my development and the development of others in order to avoid similar situations in the future.
I believe that a person should develop literacy in many aspects of life. Financial literacy is directly related to this case; the person miscalculated the change. Financial literacy is one of the most important aspects of a person’s life, and after the incident that I experienced, I began to take it even more seriously. I thought about putting in a financial statement for myself with monthly calculations so that I can calculate the possible costs for the next month. Communication with people is also part of literacy; after the situation I saw, I began to follow my speech and treat the people around me more respectfully because if you want to build a literate society, you should start with yourself.
Conclusion
Many people assume that literacy and speaking are two separate things; nevertheless, in my opinion, they are one and the same thing, with one pip emerging from the other. Speaking and literacy are inextricably linked, and I have always believed that they are. I think that literacy should be developed in various parts of one’s life. This instance is directly connected to financial literacy; the individual underestimated the change. Financial literacy is one of the most essential elements of a person’s life, and I began to take it even more seriously following the incident I had.
