Mahatma Gandhi and His Influences on Hinduism

Mahatma Gandhi, one of the greatest and most recognized spiritual leaders globally, was born on the 2nd of October, 1869. Gandhi became instrumental in fighting for India’s independence using non-violent means as well as championing for his people. His methods of attaining freedom inspired many across the globe, as this became a freedom movement across the globe later on. Gandhi was a devout Hindi and his political ideology was religiously based.

The name was given to him “Mahatma,” which was only given to those people who had been able to show great spiritual accomplishments, which he had because of his numerous Hindu teachings. His attitude towards other religions was based on respect and appreciation. This was brought about by his openness to understanding the real spiritual knowledge that is a foundation and a characteristic of the Hindu religion.

Gandhi’s focus on God was the most important belief in his life, because to him, that’s where the truth lay. His thinking led him to develop non-violent means to defect the British who had colonized India at the time. To him, using violence to win wars was evil as such could not help to achieve a just end. This belief encouraged many to start using non-violent kinds of resistance. This was evident when he led the revolt against the salt tax in 1930; whereby, the match to the sea represented getting salt from the sea.

When it came to politics, Gandhi’s influence led to the promotion of justice as his acts helped to show the plight of the oppressed and what their oppressors used to do to them. During his last years, the events that took place between India and Pakistan forced him to be actively involved in finding ways of preventing the bloodshed between Muslims and Hindus from escalating. This is one of the things that led to his brutal assassination in 1948.
