Nursing Informatics in Patient Care Delivery

Introduction

With the increased need to improve healthcare services across the globe, the use of technology such as informatics has intensified. Even though all physicians use it, it has widely impacted the nurses’ practices. Initially, health records were handwritten, leading to incorrect data capture due to poor handwriting or misspellings. However, informatics has enabled the easy recording of the patient’s health records, which has enabled quick and efficient access to information by both the care providers and the physicians. In addition, the electronic systems enable accuracy and consistency in the data. Therefore, informatics has promoted accuracy in health data.

Main body

Informatics has also impacted patient care delivery and nurses’ practices through the communication of patient information. Informatics provides space for care coordination in nursing. In other words, it provides the opportunity to monitor workflow communication and staffing. As a result, it helps the professional nurses to identify areas where current processes can be enhanced. This technique can ensure that there are enough nurses in a hospital which is essential in ensuring that patients receive the best care that can improve their lives (Hussey & Kennedy, 2016). In other words, it helps monitor and ensures that the ratio of nurses to patients is maintained, thus minimizing the fatigue of nurses that can jeopardize the quality of health.

The training of nurses and other health physicians is a great opportunity for improvement. Informatics is a new aspect of the health system, and therefore many health care workers may not be efficient (Hussey & Kennedy, 2016). Although currently implemented in all the states in the country, the nurses involved still require a lot of training. Additionally, the training should e an integrated approach where the patients should also be involved to make the system accessible to the care providers named the patients themselves.

Conclusion

In conclusion, informatics is a new technology in the health care system that has altered the practices of nurses and service delivery. It provides accurate information that physicians can access in any part of the nation. Moreover, it is an effective communication strategy that has enabled monitoring of the ratios of nurses to patients; however, some adjustments need to be considered to make the system more reliable.
