The concept of social capital has dramatically impacted many lives because it established the relations in the society so that it functions effectively. The majority of daily communication is realized via social networks, which simplifies life in general. I have never used social media platforms to build friendships solely because I do not think it could last for a long time. However, the pandemic has inflicted the compulsory usage of different online services, especially in terms of educational programs. Now, in my everyday routine, I quite often use network communication with my friends or family.
Even though I have many connections on social media platforms, I do not pay much attention to expanding the social capital because it is irrelevant for me at the moment, and sometimes I am skeptical about Internet acquaintances. It does not mean I utterly avoid online communication, but rather prefer dosing it. Yet, I believe that it is becoming more and more useful in certain situations, for example, when looking for a job.
As far as I am concerned social capital allows people to work more efficiently, contributing to the goal achievement. In addition, it enables individuals to sustain close relationships with friends, colleagues, and others (Field, 2016). On the downside, many people become victims of deceit and get into other unpleasant situations. It probably depends on one’s readiness to assess the person they talk to online adequately and know that offline communication is a better way to solve some problems. There are not many changes I would like to be implemented in regard to my social capital, but I presume my social capital will be growing due to the significant influence of social media on our lives.
