Privacy and security have become an especially topical issue in the new millennium. The main reason for that is the digitalization of almost all industries and the arising of social networks. Today people’s and organizations’ private data is saved in digital format on the Internet and software. Data security is essential in that context since losing privacy has adverse consequences. People can be harmed or crippled if public access and use of personal information are not restricted. Respect for people’s privacy intersects with respect for human identity.
Losing control over private information may lead to the risk of being robbed, stalked, and losing control over one’s dignity. An attempt at the personal information of a person or organization is regarded as a criminal act and also violates fundamental human rights (Tawalbeh et al., 2020). Individuals can suffer many consequences as a result of the disclosure of sensitive personal information. Medical records, psychiatric reports, interviews, court records, financial information (from banks, credit bureaus, etc.), social records, websites visited, and various other sources all contain personal information. When such information is disclosed, individuals can become subject to various cases of abuse.
Another reason why privacy and security are a big issue in the new millennium is the growing popularity of social media. If the level of website or platform security is not strong enough, hackers will be able to rich all the information that people have entered social media. In a more global context, cybercrime acts might be committed toward the government information and data of global organizations (Ma et al., 2020). Information system security management and website privacy policies are essential to be addressed in the new millennium. In conclusion, the importance of privacy and security has acquired new significance in the new millennium and should be approached in a relevant way.
