Introduction

These characteristics encompass their beliefs, values, intellectual and creative abilities, as well as their emotional reactions and behavior in various situations.

Internal changes in attitude occur when a person reevaluates their assessment of an object or situation. For example, if a person has disliked cats for a long time but then gets a cat, their attitude towards cats may change for the better. External changes in attitude occur when the surrounding conditions change. For example, if a person refused to go to summer camp because they were afraid of insects, but then moved to an area without insects, their attitude towards camps may change.

Social Influences

Conformity is one type of social influence that occurs when people modify their behavior and attitudes to align with the norms and expectations of their group or society. Conformity can be positive or negative. For example, positive conformity can manifest in a person behaving according to accepted norms and rules, which helps them achieve success and be accepted in society. However, negative conformity can lead to a person making incorrect decisions, endorsing negative beliefs, and behaving in an inadequate manner.

Individuals modify their attitudes and actions due to social pressure through three distinct mechanisms. Normative influence is the tendency to change one’s behavior simply to align with social expectations—for instance, a new hire working overtime just to fit in with their colleagues. Informational influence occurs when people adjust their beliefs and actions based on information they receive from others, such as seeking cues from those around them on how to act when unsure (Spielman et al., 2020). Finally, identification influence occurs when a person changes their attitude or behavior specifically to conform to a desirable group or its leader, modifying their conduct to gain acceptance into that chosen group.

These types of social influence can affect a person’s attitude toward various objects and situations. For example, if one student in a class begins to bully another, and the rest of the students laugh and support the bully, it could change the victim’s attitude towards their classmates and the school as a whole. The victim may become more skeptical and hostile towards the people and situations associated with the school.

The types of social influence can impact a person’s attitude in different situations (Spielman et al., 2020). For example, informational influence can affect a person’s attitude towards a particular object or situation if they receive new information. If a person previously had no opinion about a political candidate but learned more about their political views and programs, their attitude towards that candidate may change.

The Role of Social Psychology in Understanding Human Behavior

Social psychology examines the interaction between individuals and their behavior in social settings. It helps to understand how social factors influence a person’s attitude and behavior and how people adapt to different social conditions. Social psychology studies social behavior, including social interaction, social influence, conformity, stereotypes and prejudices, intergroup dynamics, and more. Social psychology also investigates how people perceive and interpret social situations, make decisions, and interact in groups.

This field of knowledge enables a deeper understanding of various aspects of human life, including interpersonal relationships, conflicts, team interactions, political and economic processes, and more (Whiteley, 2021). Social psychology can be beneficial not only to ordinary people but also to professionals in various fields, such as marketing, business, and politics. Studying social processes and interactions can help them better understand the needs and motives of their clients, partners, and colleagues and make more effective decisions in various situations.

Understanding personality and relationships can help individuals better comprehend themselves and others, thereby enhancing their interpersonal relationships and communication. For example, understanding that attitudes can change under the influence of various factors can help people better comprehend the behavior of others and avoid taking it personally (Whiteley, 2021). In addition, knowledge about conformity can help people better understand why they or others may change their attitudes in social situations.

Conclusion

In conclusion, both personality and attitude are foundational concepts in social psychology, as they significantly influence human behavior. A person’s attitudes are subject to both internal and external shifts, often triggered by new information, experiences, or changes in their social environment. Furthermore, the phenomenon of conformity plays a major role, as its influence—which can be either beneficial or detrimental—alters how a person views a given object or situation. Ultimately, social psychology studies the dynamics between individuals and their actions in social settings, which helps us define how these social influences dictate people’s attitudes and behaviors.
