Sonia Sotomayor became the first Hispanic justice of the United States Supreme Court to be personally appointed by President Barack Obama. This position is very honorable because the appointment does not occur by submitting a resume, but only personally by the country’s president for merits, honesty, and wisdom, and the position takes place for the rest of the candidate’s life. All these traits were noted by Obama in Sotomayor, which allowed him to appoint a reliable and fair person to this position.
One of the main traits of Sonia Sotomayor’s character is the desire to achieve her goals. From a young age, inspired by the series, she knew that she wanted to become a judge. Throughout her youth, she went to her goal, getting the best grades at school and university, and was awarded with various scholarships. After training, she took a job as an assistant district attorney and then decided to open a private practice, becoming a part of a prominent New York firm. She rose through the ranks and was appointed by Presidents to high positions in state district courts, which eventually led her to work on the Supreme Court. Owing to her perseverance and aspiration, she honestly earned high position and received recognition from Presidents and colleagues.
The second trait of Sotomayor’s character, especially noted by colleagues, is her humanity and kindness towards people. Although she holds a high position, she still treats her colleagues with respect and friendliness. Colleagues spoke exceptionally positively about her, saying that no matter how tired she was, people in the courtroom were comfortable with her (“Sonia Sotomayor,” 2017). She proved to be a polite, open, and friendly person. For those Latinos who could not afford legal aid, she helped free of charge, allocating an entire working day a week.
In conclusion, Sonia Sotomayor has become an accurate role model for many of her compatriots. Being a girl from a low-income family, owing to her perseverance and aspiration, she was able to achieve her goals and objectives and, at the same time, not to lose herself and remain a person. She made dreams come true, and became a real example and a model of willpower and aspiration for many people.
