Strategic planning and development in the airlines are crucial because it provides the structure and capacity to be flexible and adaptable in a dynamic environment that is constantly evolving. In the airline, the executive team is responsible for providing a strategic plan for creating guiding organizational principles, formulating the strategic focus areas, and building long-term goals that will guide the airline to establish aligned goals and actions for achieving the vision of success. The executive team should be responsible for strategic planning and development because they are expected to accumulate all available data to create the big picture of where the airline is trying to be in the next several years.
Besides, a part of strategic planning is collaborations and partnerships with other entities. The executive team will decide on organizations that can become potential partners in the future to enhance competitive advantage. The executive team will have to be well-educated about customers’ expectations and needs as a result of market research. Many airlines and airports may be challenged by the problem of the shrinking marketplace and fewer resources due to the significant downfall in the industry associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, it is expected that the executive team will take a transparent and thoughtful approach to strategic change to create an environment within their organization that is conducive to positive change. Finally, the executive team is the one responsible for strategy formulation because the leadership will have to create a shared vision and common goals to act as a platform for building organizational energy for meaningful and constructive change.
