In “Overview of the immune response,” Chaplin analyzes different aspects of the immune system focusing on its mechanisms used to fight infections and prevent the damage of self-tissues.
In the article, Chaplin emphasizes that many powerful and destructive effector mechanisms are involved in combating pathogenic microbes. Fortunately, the immune response is designed to distinguish between self and non-self and avoid damaging self-tissues.
