Introduction

The incredible speed of technological development makes the unmanned industry one of the most fast developing. Unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) are now used in traffic management, cargo transportations, and even mining, to name but a few spheres of application of pilotless technologies. The most critical issue in sensing, perception, and processing is supposed to be the elaboration of lightweight technologies. The current essay discusses how the mentioned advancement of UAS affects the development of the entire unmanned industry.

The appearance and further development of lightweight technologies of sensing, perception, and processing expand the possibility of application of UAS. For instance, according to Wang, Simeonova, and Shahbazi (2019), these newly established technologies enable monitoring road conditions more efficiently since cameras inserted in such UAS could make videos from various perspectives. Therefore, this contributes to the safety of drivers and the better awareness of both drivers and road services of the current situation in a particular place.

Another significant dimension of lightweight sensing, perception and processing technologies was described by Tommaselli and Torres (2016). The authors reveal that the application of the newly developed lightweight laser scanner during the examination of a landscape increases the accuracy of the retrieved data. This feature is immensely crucial for the services connected with geolocation, urban space planning, and monitoring of the fields and forests. From this, it could be inferred that adding lightweight technologies to unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) enhances the output of the latter.

The appearance of lightweight technologies of sensing, perception, and processing changes not only the process of traffic or forest monitoring but the strategies of military actions as well. Ball (2019) claims that the combination of 4G with sophisticated low weight UAS makes the latter a useful tool for communications at long distances. Therefore, it could be concluded that the active development of methods of sensing and processing changes the way wars are being conducted. At the same time, these technologies allow saving the lives of soldiers.

To conclude, it should be said that the elaboration of sensing, perception and processing technologies modifies and expands the ways of application of UAS, making them more useful and advanced. These developments contribute to the rapid rise of the popularity of UAS in a wide range of spheres. What is more important, the described technologies improve the quality of services provided for people and, in some cases, even improve their safety and well-being.
