Communication Studies is a peer-reviewed journal whose primary objective is to cover the current agenda on communicative processes with a particular focus on the theory and research on the field of interpersonal communication. It is published both in printed and online editions by Taylor & Francis Group, specifically by Routledge. The journal releases six issues per year and is an official member of the Central States Communication Association (Taylor & Francis Online). The editor-in-chief of Communication Studies is Patrick R. Spence.
The Journal’s History
The history of the journal began in 1949 when it was established as Central Speech Journal. The journal bore this title up to 1988 when it was renamed Communication Studies. The journal was founded in order to help the scientists research a communicative sphere and collect all the scientific articles on the field in one place (Taylor & Francis Online). Such a policy was aimed at providing a solid base for further research on the area. Interpersonal communication always was and still remains an important and fruitful object of studies because the sphere is constantly expanding, and new research issues emerge there.
The Literature Content the Journal Publishes
Currently, Communication Studies publishes high-quality articles, essays, and research focused on the process of interpersonal communication and its peculiarities. All the materials the journal publishes in its print and online editions reflect the diversity and flexible nature of studies that contribute to the field of the human communication process. The literature materials Communication Studies contains form a solid base for further research on the area and make a significant contribution to the development of the science about the interaction between people (Taylor & Francis Online). In addition, it is worth mentioning that all the literature works the journal contains are free of racism, sexism, and other prejudices that exist in the world nowadays.
Communication Studies publishes scientific works in many fields that involve the process of interpersonal communication. Thus, the journal contains a variety of articles that reflect the broadness of the areas where interaction is involved. They include interpersonal, international, group, intercultural, and organizational mass media, healthcare, politics, as well as public, digital, or rhetoric communication (Taylor & Francis Online). The journal supports and welcomes the materials from both old and new areas of the communication studies that involve different approaches and methodologies of the research. In addition, it is necessary to mention that the journal prioritizes the studies that are scientifically important for the development of social and academic knowledge of communicative processes that exist in society. The editors and staff stress that all the literary works that are published in the journal were carefully proofread and checked for errors, inaccurate or misinterpreted data.
The Significance of the Journal to the Rhetoric Ph.D. Core
The journal is important for the Rhetoric Ph.D. core since it contains the information that may be helpful in studying the discipline. Rhetoric studies the oratory, which involves constant connection and communication between the speaker and the audience. Rhetoric is based on principles of interpersonal communication and interaction since all the strategies of delivering a speech in public presume the mutual involvement of both the speaker and the listeners. Hence, rhetoric is based on principles of interpersonal communication, and literary works published in Communication Studies address different aspects of the issue, as well as the tendencies for its further development both orators and rhetoric teachers should take into account.
When looking through the articles the journal publishes, it is possible to find several ones that are implicitly or explicitly related to rhetoric. It is possible to single out several articles from the journal that might be helpful in interacting between the audience and the speaker. For instance, the article Forceful or Funny? Audience Interpretations of Narrative Persuasion in Satirical Entertainment Media addresses the way the listeners react to different persuasion techniques used in satirical media (Thcernev et al. 737). This article may help the orator to build his speech in the most understandable for the audience way and, thus, convey the needed information and message of the talk effectively and accurately. In addition, it might be helpful for the rhetoric teachers and students, as they might widen their knowledge on the current tendencies that emerged in oratory during past years.
