Introduction to the Topic
My chosen topic is whether sex education should be taught in public schools. The book, “With Good Reason: A Guide to Critical Thinking, ” is a manual for analytical thinking and solid logic. The authors hold that different thinking styles, such as analytical, creative, and strategic, are discussed, focusing on critical thinking and the qualities people need to cultivate (Hardy et al., 2015).
The value of being open to having one’s mind changed by evidence and practicing intellectual humility is equally stressed. The (01ACH, n.d., 00:15:48) mentions that people are entitled to think or believe whatever they think, which is wrong with concern to logical thinking. It is not accepted in logical thinking because someone may lack the evidence to prove their stand.
Arguments in Favor
Based on this topic, people can develop two arguments; some could support sex education in public schools, while others might be against it. In promoting sex education in public schools, there could be two main premises. Firstly, public schools should be taught sex education because young people need to make informed decisions.
Secondly, nowadays, students can start engaging in sexual activities at an early age. Due to this fact, it will be proper to teach them about sex to aid them in reducing unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). STDs and early or unwanted pregnancies can interfere with young people’s health and education, making sex education relevant for them.
Arguments Against
On the contrary, some may argue that public schools should not teach sex education for two reasons. They may hold that schools should only teach academic work; others may also outline that discussing sex activities with teenagers could be against some community’s values. Thus, depending on community values and the known public schools, some may perceive it wrong for public schools to teach sex education.
Conclusion
People with different perspectives on this topic can view it from a health perspective, for example, the impact of sexual knowledge on young people. I believe understanding this topic can lead to better health since sex has an adverse and direct impact on human health. Comprehending this topic will assist societies in making decisions with reasons rather than emotions, as (01BC, n.d., 00:19:06) explained. Apprehending this topic will enable people to make substantial choices, especially regarding non-factual claims, as explained in (02CH, n.d., 00:11:17). Such understanding will place individuals in a better position to determine the actual argument rather than persuade them.
