The Golden Age of Islam and Its Impact on Modern Civilization

Throughout history, different regions prospered, resulting in major advancements and innovations. While there were many developments in the West, there were also major advancements in the East that had significant impacts on modern society. One such period of breakthroughs is the Golden Age of Islam.

The term Islamic Golden Age refers to a period in Islamic history, usually spanning the 8th to the 13th centuries (“The Islamic Golden Age“). During this era, numerous caliphates ruled over much of the former Islamic world, and scientific advancement, economic growth, and artistic creation flourished (“The Islamic Golden Age“). Thus, during the Golden Age of Islam, significant advancements in mathematics, science, and the arts were made, which demonstrated the impact of these endeavors on modern progress and the role of scholarship.

Impact of Previous Civilizations

Before delving deeper into the influence and emergence of the Golden Age of Islam, it is crucial to examine the main factors that contributed to it. The scientific know-how of the “ancient Persian, Greek, Roman, Phoenician, Chinese, Indian, and Egyptian civilizations”—among others—was consumed by the Arabs after their conquests of the land (“The Islamic Golden Age“). The “mathematical, geometrical, and astronomical knowledge of the Alexandrians”—including that of Euclid and Claudius Ptolemy—was retrieved by scientists (“The Islamic Golden Age“).

In this case, many developments later created by the Arabs stemmed from knowledge they gained from other cultures. For example, the mathematician Alhazen found the sum formula for the fourth integer in calculus by employing a technique that was easily extended to find the total for any integral power (“The Islamic Golden Age“). Moreover, Persian scientist Muhammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī was a mathematician who introduced the Arabic numerals and the word “algorithm” (“The Islamic Golden Age“). Thus, the scholars used previously collected information and built upon it to create new inventions.

At the same time, the field of mathematics was not the only area in which Arabs excelled and drew on the wisdom of other civilizations. For example, medieval Islamic culture placed a strong emphasis on medicine. Islamic doctors and academics created a vast and intricate body of work that explored and synthesized medical concepts and procedures in response to local and historical conditions (“The Islamic Golden Age“).

The scientific and clinical expertise that was “developed in India, Greece, Persia, and Rome” served as the foundation for Islamic medicine (“The Islamic Golden Age“). “Based on their Arabic translations of writings in Syriac, Greek, and Sanskrit, Islamic scholars created new medical wisdom (“The Islamic Golden Age“). By organizing the Greco-Roman medical scholarship into encyclopedias, Islamic scholars attempted to make the Greek tradition more comprehensible, accessible, and attainable through instruction (“The Islamic Golden Age“). Thus, there were not only new inventions but also the enhancement of previous knowledge, which helped Arabs make use of knowledge from other cultures.

Emergence of the Golden Age

As for the emergence of the Golden Age, the Islamic civilization flourished during the Abbasid dynasty. According to history, Muslims were at the pinnacle of their power and led global civilization during the Abbasid dynasty (Rusydi et al. 599). Arabs started to understand what their neighbors had accomplished in terms of certain facets of culture and civilization through firsthand interaction (Rusydi et al. 600).

Unlike the Umayyad dynasty, which placed more emphasis on political matters, the Abbasid dynasty’s primary accomplishment in the history of Islamic civilization was its staunch advocacy for the advancement of the arts, sciences, and philosophy (Rusydi et al. 600). The majority of the Banu Abbasi caliphs were generally wise and knowledgeable individuals who greatly aided this field (Rusydi et al. 600). Therefore, advocacy and support from the leaders helped enhance innovations further.

However, it is noteworthy that many of the developments and innovations were linked to religion. In other words, the Islamic world has contributed significantly to broader knowledge and the study of religion. Islamic scholars of that era contributed to the findings of their research and philosophical ideas, in addition to studying both philosophy and science from Greek texts (Rusydi et al. 600). As a result, Islamic scientists and philosophers emerged. These academics possess integrated knowledge, meaning that the broad knowledge they produce is inextricably linked to religious understanding or to Islamic principles (Rusydi et al. 600).

For instance, Ibn Sina is a specialist in Islamic sciences like tasawuf in addition to philosophy and medicine (Rusydi et al. 600). A point that should be emphasized is that the global community saw the Abbasid dynasty as a time of philosophical and scientific rebirth (Rusydi et al. 601). This suggests that Islam does not view religious knowledge and general science as opposing forces, but rather sees them as complementary and mutually reinforcing.

Important Figures of the Golden Age

Although some noteworthy figures were mentioned earlier, they deserve more attention. That was a time when many eminent scholars lived (Rusydi et al. 601). The first important figure of the Golden Age is Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi, a Persian scholar, who made a substantial contribution to the advancement of algebra. Algebra’s growth in Southwest and Central Asia, North Africa, and Europe was significantly impacted by Al-Khwarizimi, and this, in turn, affected the advancement of algebra and medieval and modern mathematics globally (Nabirahni et al. 13). Among the subjects al-Khwarizmi thoroughly studied and eventually made contributions to were geography, astrophysics, and geometry (Nabirahni et al. 13).

Another person who is connected to the field of science is Abu Ali al-Ḥu-sayn (Ibn Sina), a physician. He was referred to as Avicenna in the West (Pajević et al. 65). He wrote The Canon of Medicine during his lifetime, which served as the foundation for medical research for several centuries in both the East and the West (Pajević et al. 65). In addition to physical illnesses, a few mental illnesses were also documented during that time, along with information on their causes, symptoms, diagnoses, and treatments (Pajević et al. 65). His writings demonstrate Ibn Sina’s comprehensive and unifying genius, creating a comprehensive medical guide for professionals in the area.

In terms of philosophy, the greatest scholar of the Golden Age of Islam was Ibn Rushd. The man was also known as Averroes in the West (Etuk 174). Averroes had a significant impact on Western thought in several fields of study, as well as on thought patterns in the East (Etuk 174). His philosophical theories, particularly those derived from his significant Aristotelian commentary, rekindled Western scholars’ interest in the ancient Greek philosophers (Etuk 174). His belief that philosophy should complement religion rather than replace it, and that all people are intellectually equal, are the cornerstones of his thinking (Etuk 175). Therefore, the philosophic perspectives of the thinkers of the Golden Age were connected to people and religion.

Impact on Modern Life

As for the impact on modern life, the Golden Age of Islam has, without a doubt, significantly influenced global fields. This has been made possible by Islam’s stance on learning and scholarship, which is supported by the Hadith (Prophetic Traditions) and the Holy Qur’an (Maigida 410). As a result, Islam’s followers were inspired to explore the study of ancient cultures, often in the domains of the arts and sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics (Maigida 410).

As seen above, these Muslim luminaries focused on contemporary areas of mathematics, medicine, science, astronomy, biology, philosophy, and other fields. These days, historians and academics from both Europe and America acknowledge and connect Islam’s fundamental achievements to all contemporary advancements in mathematics, science, technology, and philosophy (Maigida 410). As mentioned by Maigida, “Islam and knowledge have been so synonymous from the inception of the religion of Islam” (420). Consequently, modern life has been significantly influenced by earlier explorations across various fields during the Golden Age of Islam.

In terms of power structures, reflecting on the impact of the Golden Age of Islam reveals the role of power in advancing and innovating. For instance, it was mentioned before that power was centralized in the hands of Islamic caliphs and leaders during the Golden Age of Islam, who supported and encouraged scholars and intellectuals. In other words, the proliferation of knowledge and cross-cultural interaction was made possible by this centralized authority. Studying the Golden Age of Islam can lead to discussions about representation and power dynamics in a global setting.

As for social consequences, one can see how the effects of the Golden Age of Islam on gender roles, educational opportunities, and social stratification. The ethical consequences are connected to intellectual appropriation conducted by the Arab culture during the conquering era. Ultimately, modern updates on the topic focus on preserving and protecting manuscripts and artifacts from the Islamic Golden Era. Manuscripts, buildings, castles, tombs, and images of the heroes and figures who made major contributions to the establishment, governance, and progress of their country must all be protected (“Preserving Islamic Heritage“). Such pieces of knowledge demonstrate the gradual transformations of society and the impact of religion.

Impact on Personal Worldviews

Finally, researching the Golden Age of Islam and its historical significance broadened my understanding of Islamic civilization’s contributions and the interconnectedness of cultures. With the information I learned, I gained deeper insights into how intercultural exchange and collaboration contribute to human progress. In terms of engaging with people around the world, the research I conducted made me more curious about different cultures. Consequently, I can communicate with others with greater appreciation for their background and culture.

Conclusion

In summary, significant advances in science, mathematics, and the arts were made during the Golden Age of Islam, demonstrating the importance of scholarship and the impact of these endeavors on modern progress. After conquering the region, the Arabs devoured the scientific knowledge of the old civilizations. Scientists recovered knowledge in mathematics, medicine, geography, biology, geometry, and astronomy.

Significantly, many advancements and innovations were linked to religion. Islam suggests that religious knowledge and general science can be complementary and mutually inspiring rather than mutually exclusive. The Golden Age of Islam’s earlier investigations into a variety of subjects had a profound impact on modern life. Lastly, learning about the historical significance of the Islamic Golden Age helped me to better appreciate the contributions of Islamic civilization and the interdependence of all cultures.
