The Great Gatsby: A Book Review and Summary

Scott Fitzgerald is a famous American writer, and most of his works are devoted to the jazz era. He elaborated this term, which means a happy decade between the end of World War I and the beginning of the Depression. This era involves the rebellion of the young generation against the traditional culture, which resulted in appearing in such a music genre as jazz. The Great Gatsby is a novel, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, about this music genre, and this book is considered to be the peak of his career. Despite being published in 1925, even in the present day developments, this composure is highly evaluated among literary critics and perceived to be one of the most prominent novels ever written. Many generations have already passed this book, and its popularity is still increasing.

As was mentioned earlier, the style of this work of literature is a novel. However, the author frequently uses some approaches, which are characteristics of realism. Fitzgerald has managed to convey the specificity of the time, where the happenings take place. The author has presented an utter masterpiece, which includes the combination of music, mysteries, secrets, and an abyss of despair. The readers can follow Gatsby’s path of life and observe how his predestination is connected to the ones of other characters. Only in the middle of the narration, Fitzgerald begins to reveal the real reasons and motives of the main character’s actions. There is no pure love story in the novel as it is a characteristic of the 19th-century works of literature. He demonstrates a world where people are selfish and self-interested.

The main idea of the whole novel is to depict the injustice of the young man’s fate. He has fallen in love with a woman who he cannot marry. Fitzgerald stated that this topic is familiar and especially painful for him, as he had to experience a similar scenario in his life (Fitzgerald, 2020). In addition, in the book, the author regards a wide range of deep topics, such as inequality in society, living in illusions, friendship, and family (Fitzgerald, 2020). He also presents his reflections on the problem of having a particular habit and fear of its deprivation.

The idea of this work of literature is to convey that life is not similar to a fairy tale scenario. On the contrary, life is a tragedy, and a person may encounter a significant number of orders, and overcoming them does not lead to a lucky and peaceful end in the majority of cases. Gatsby’s path of life was difficult and full of problems, though he believed in his happiness with Daisey in the future. The reality has appeared to be opposite to his anticipations. Daisey could not leave her husband and child, and Gatsby had to die in loneliness. His lover did not visit the funeral ceremony of the main character (Fitzgerald, 2020). Luck is unpredictable in the same way as love, and justice does not always win.

In summary, it is worthy of mentioning that F. Scott Fitzgerald has received positive comments on his novel in print media. Nevertheless, the sales of the book were not rapid as the writer wished. The contemporary critics did not present a considerable number of reviews on this work of literature. However, these days, the novel has received recognition, and the author and his professional activity are well-known worldwide.
