The IOM Report in Nursing

Introduction

The American Association of College of Nursing indicates that there are varying research expectations for different academic levels of nurses. As such, this implies that nurses play different research roles in accordance with their academic qualifications. In particular, the Baccalaureate, masters, doctoral, and post-doctoral levels occupy different niches in nursing-based research as discussed onwards.

Baccalaureate Level

Essentially, baccalaureate programs are meant to instill knowledge concerning the research process. Importantly, it also trains them to identify problems that can seek research. As a result, nurses at this level identify practical problems that seek solutions and draw the research process roadmap. Additionally, since they are equipped with basic understanding of evidence-based practice, they develop ways in which research findings can be implemented practically (Majid & Foo, 2011).

Masters Level

At this level, nurses are capable of initiating research based on a pre-identified problem. The capability to initiate research comes from their leadership skills and the ability to create effective research teams.

Doctoral Level

Nurses at doctoral levels are divided into either practice-focused or research-focused practitioners. As such, the practice-focused nurses are responsible of using research findings to solve complicated clinical problems. On the other hand, the research-focused nurses are responsible of conducting further research to extend findings and bring new knowledge.

Post-Doctoral Level

Post-doctoral nurses advance from the research-focused doctoral nurses. In this case, the post-doctoral nurses have the responsibility to handle multidimensional research studies. This condition is based on the fact that these nurses have advanced research skills (Gordon & Watts, 2011).

Summary of Health Care Article

Overview of the Summary

Essentially, this summary discusses a research conducted by Stevens (2013) regarding the current impact of Evidence-based Practice on nursing and its future. It presents six crucial findings that relate to the impacts of EBP as discussed onwards.

Basic Meaning of EBP

Stevens (2013) first indicates that EBP is a concept that seeks to apply the current knowledge to make decision in nursing. The author also expresses the opinion that EBP has a high likelihood of achieving high quality care. Based on the definition, the article argues that EBP embodies three aspects of quality, including services, expected results and the use current research evidence. As such, EBP uses quality health services to achieve the required results in consistency with the available scientific results.

Impact on Nursing Practice

The research finds that EBP has affected the nursing practice is many ways. Importantly, the researcher discovered that EBP has increased the proficiency and accuracy of nurses and care providers. This is attributed to the increased use of scientific evidence to provide care and diagnoses. As such, the use of scientific research has reduced safety issues in the nursing profession. In addition, EBP has raised the standards of training and improved the learning tools. This undertaking leads to increased patients’ safety in the healthcare.

Impacts of EBP on the Models and Frameworks of Nurses

The author indicates that there are 47 different models of Evidence Based Practice. They have changed the way nurses organize their thinking, research, and practice. Importantly, it has increased the use of research in practice and improved the process of transforming knowledge. Additionally, it has emphasized organizational change to enable nurses to adopt new knowledge and skills easily. Besides, the concept of EBP has ensured effective exchange of knowledge and improved the methods of its synthesis. The research emphasized the ACE Star Model which advocates to present knowledge in forms of guidelines. As such, nurses do not have to master all the existing concepts. Instead, they access it in summarized forms that are easy to understand and apply.

Effects of EBP on Nursing Education

The article indicated that the IOM Report found a big gap in the quality of education provided in the academic and practical settings. This implies that nurses and other healthcare professionals did not receive adequate training to ensure high proficiency. EBP has closed this gap by overhauling the methodologies of learning and teaching. EBP has closed this gap because it helps the professionals to apply their intellectual skills in the practical settings. As such, this perspective has eliminated situations where professionals acquire academic skills without understanding their application.

Effects on Nursing Research

EBP has helped to change the nursing research profoundly due to the adoption of evident-into-practice ideology. In this case, EBP has intensified the use of translational science as well as patient centered care. As a result, the contemporary nursing research focuses on the patient more than other player.

Next Main Ideas

According to this article, there are two next ideas related to the Evidence Based Practice. First, it indicates EBP will shift from individual-based research to group-oriented systems. This implies that the next campaign will focus on mobilizing team-based research studies in order to introduce interdisciplinary drive. Another next big idea was the establishment of Improvement Science Research Network (ISRN) which eased the replication of research evidence application.
