The Letter to Dean of the Nursing Department

Dear Madam,

Re: Request to Re-take the ADN 151 Class and Stay in the Program.

My names are DC and I was admitted into Rio Hondo’s Nursing program in the summer of 2011. Regrettably, I failed to obtain a passing grade in my AND 151 class. This has jeopardized my future stay in the program. For this reason, I would like to offer my appeal petitioning for a second chance to retake the class. I take full responsibility for my poor academic performance in the class and it is my sincere hope that my request to re-take the class will be accepted. I have through this letter highlighted the issue that led to my poor performance and the steps that I have undertaken to overcome it.

The primary reason why I performed poorly in the class was that I struggled to find adequate time to read the necessary chapters for the weekly exams and to review the laboratory/clinical portion of the class. As a result of my poor time management skills, I did my exams while badly prepared. Since I have realized that I lack good time management skills, I have recently registered for the Read 134 at the College. This class focuses on acquiring study strategies, time management methods, test preparation procedures, and research preparation. I have great confidence that with the help of this class, I will be able to better manage my time and hence demonstrate improved academic performance in my ADN 151 class along with the other classes.

As you must have noticed, I have turned in this letter later than I should have. This is because I wanted to demonstrate my seriousness about improving my time management skills. I did not want to simply state that I planned on taking the Read 134 class; rather, I wanted to tell you that I was already enrolled in it. I had to wait for a few days since no seats were available. I am now enrolled in the class and attached to this letter is a printed schedule showing that I have indeed registered for the class. In addition to this, I have also attempted to register in similar classes in different colleges such as Santa Ana College (counseling 111-Learning Skills Development) and Irvine Valley College (counseling 10- Introduction to College Study Skills). I however have to wait until next week to find out if I have been enrolled.

My future career is greatly dependent on my completing this course successfully. Currently, I also work in a care and rehabilitation center as a CAN. At my job, I love getting to know the patients and helping them with their everyday needs. I am also very curious about the medical procedures being done to them and about their medications. This job has increased my desire to become a nurse since this would give me the capabilities to be even more helpful to my patients. My employers are very supportive and they have allowed me to be on call only basis since they understand that the program requires a lot of time and dedication. I have the support of the administrator, nurse director, all of the LVN, and RN’s. They all believe that I have what it takes to make a great nurse. My inability to complete this program would therefore be a huge disappointment not only to me but also to the people who believe in me.

I am passionate about my career in Nursing and was very excited on receiving my acceptance letter to join your nursing program because it showed me that my hard work to complete the pre-requisites had paid off. I would therefore be very grateful if I was given the chance to retake AND 151 and complete the program for it is my desire and passion to do nursing. This brief lapse that I have suffered has only increased my resolve to work harder and become a good nurse in the future. I hope that you will give my plea positive consideration. Thank you for taking the time to look into my appeal.

Yours Sincerely,

DC.
