Obesity belongs to one of the most concerning issues in the USA. This problem is acute for the whole country as well as for separate states and counties. For example, in Florida, with its high population of Hispanic and Latino Americans, special attention is paid to the minority health (“Minority health and health equity,” 2019). Therefore, solving the problem of obesity that is one of the most concerning issues among such residents of the USA is seen as an important goal to achieve. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the matter of a large number of overweight people in the Latin community of Florida and the means by which the situation can be improved.
The problem under analysis is a complicated issue of the community. Researchers note that its aspects are poverty, psychological problems, unhealthy eating habits and lack of facilities and projects aimed at promoting love for sport (Engel, 2018). In Florida, the obesity issue has been worked on within a framework of the National Minority Health Month which started over 100 years ago (“Minority health month,” 2019). Still, there is much to improve in this direction, therefore, under such programs, recommendations on a healthy lifestyle and diet will be given (“Minority health month,” 2019). Another important project of the Health Department is Closing the Gap grant the goal of which is to help the community address its most pressing health needs, like obesity (“Closing the Gap grant,” 2019). The plan will continue in 2021-2022 and include such measures as increasing the availability of services for behavioral problems and implementing physical activity projects at school (“Closing the Gap grant,” 2019). For example, APNs and direct care nurses might give topic-related lectures, examine schoolchildren and define the treatment for those who appear to be overweight (Engel, 2018). All these measures might be aimed at eliminating the origins of the problem of obesity and result in certain progress within the period of time indicated.
To sum up, in the USA, the extra weight might be regarded as a serious threat to public health both locally and nationally. The responsible authorities of Florida have been grappling with the issue by designing and implementing the health improvement projects among Hispanic and Latin Americans. The measures to tackle the problem of obesity include projects against psychological problems and other matters related because it is significant to combat different aspects of the overweight issue.
